TREE LIGHTING: Earlier this year, New Yorkers Fountains of Wayne transformed Demetri Martin into a lonely suit living in Brooklyn in this video. Tonight the band will be rockin' around the Stuy Town Christmas tree. A reader writes in:I just happened to see this flyer hanging up for the annual christmas tree lighting. And what the hell is this...7:30-8:00pm, FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE. Seems like it's top secret, but there are flyers everywhere.Random! But if you're...

Way out in Vernon, NJ today, the U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix Series is taking place at Mountain Creek (fondly remembered by Gothamist as Vernon Valley/Great Gorge). The Grand Prix halfpipe competition takes place from 4-6:10 p.m. and will feature some of the country's best including Shaun White and Ross Powers. If that's not enough fun, Jersey's own Fountains of Wayne will be performing at 7:20. Following their performance, the 2006 U.S. Olympic team will be announced (full schedule here). It almost sounds like a perfect day. Head out to Mountain Creek, ski or ride some, watch a competition, listen to music, and find out who will represent the USA in Italy.

Tonight, thousands of New Yorkers will be running in Central Park for Nike's Run Hit Wonder race, 5 miles around the mini loop. The Donnas are the opening act at the starting line (6PM), Fountains of Wayne, DJ Z-Trip, Nina Sky and Chingy are performing along the course, and there's a post-race concert by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (8PM). Now, the concert is only open to registrants, but we've heard that in the past, the course is actually pretty friendly to spectators. You'll probably be able to hear the race from outside the park as well. And the Donnas are playing a free concert tomorrow night at Hudson River Park.

Gothamist didn't know if it was some sort of subtle threat to voters' ears or just some way to show how the Internet! seriously! rocks!, but we have to admit that we got a kick of the NY Times' story about how City Council Speaker and wannabe mayor Gifford Miller love love loves to sing. The NY Times also has a slideshow with audio that has Giffy belting out some tunes, and while he's not the worst singer, we understand why the Times, in the print edition, noted that the audio was "Not Available in Stores." Miller mentions at various points that he's not allowed to sing at home but that he realized his many public appearances with captive audiences would let him "indulge" himself. Listen, Giff, if this means that all the mayoral candidates will get equal singing time, we're so going to send bills from our ear specialist. But other than that, this is the makings of a great off-off-off Broadway musical!

Raspberries, the Posies, Todd Rundgren, Jellyfish (without the bellbottoms and bright colors) and the Pernice Brothers. Fireworks Go Up! has a new record, , out on Baryon Records.

Leo Tolstoy. Adam Sandler. Justin Case. Aside being great men of their times, their common thread? September 9. Happy Birthday, Justin.
