Injured Hawk's Mate Protective During Morning Rescue

Earlier today there was a report over the newswire about a "vicious hawk at the library" of Fordham University. The blog Fordham Notes has an update clarifying things, reporting that there was an injured red-tailed hawk and the vicious hawk was actually the injured bird's mate! The NYPD was called to the Rose Hill campus and has now taken the hawk to the vet. "We are still awaiting word on its condition, but we understand that officers had to wear protective gear to shield themselves from the bird's mate, which was not allowing anyone to get close to its injured counterpart."

Catholics Don't Object to Bloomberg Commencement 'Choice'

While President Obama drew a lot of flak from the Catholics angry about him giving the commencement speech at Notre Dame yesterday, pro-choicer Mayor Bloomberg seemed to fly under the church's radar for being honored (and giving "humorous" remarks) at local Catholic university Fordham on Saturday. A spokesman for Archbishop Dolan said that he was "unaware that the mayor was at Fordham," but stopped short of offering any take on the school's choice. Dolan has been very open about his objections to Obama speaking at Notre Dame, saying this weekend it could be seen as an endorsement of the president's pro-choice stance. Good thing he cleared that up since there's been so much speculation on just where the Catholic Church stands on the issue. The Post talked to one New Yorker who sat out her Notre Dame graduation yesterday (opting to spend the time praying instead). She told the paper, "I wouldn't be able to approve them handing him a degree. Your commencement speaker is supposed to be someone you emulate, and they're supposed to be sending you off into the world."

Bloomberg's "Secrets To Success" At Fordham Graduation

Mayor Bloomberg was awarded an honorary degree at Fordham University's commencement yesterday. While he wasn't the marquee speaker—that was Tom Brokaw—he did get to tell the graduates a little something: "I am not going to tell you right here the secrets to success, although it never hurts to be the first one into the office each morning-and the last one to leave. I am not going to tell you how to choose a career, but it doesn't hurt to pick that first job based on how much you'll learn, not how much you'll earn. I'm not going to tell you how to avoid getting fired, because I have been fired, and it was the best thing that ever happened to my career. I am not I am not going to tell you how to spend your free time, but there's nothing more important than giving back to your community."

U2 Woke Up Fordham This Morning

This morning U2 headed up to Fordham University to wake up the faculty and students with a relatively small, and very early concert. CityRoom reports that security was tight, but five hairdressers from Michigan managed to smooth talk their way in.

Fordham Does a Take Two on Expansion After UWS 'FU'

After last month a local community board "pitched a shutout" with a 31-0 vote against Fordham University's plans to do some major expansion to its Lincoln Square campus, the school has employed the help of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. Now Fordham has a modified plan that they hope will placate residents and allow them to move forward on what would be their "superblock," from 60th to 62nd Streets between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues. The new plan cuts out 206,000 square feet of the proposal by moving some classrooms underground, devoting less space to parking and setting buildings farther from the curb. It would also mean that Fordham would not put up a dense cluster of towers as they were formerly setting out to do. Helen Rosenthal, chairwoman of Community Board 7, representing what Curbed calls the "junkyard dog" of neighborhoods, seems to be appeased and sounds on board with the modifications. Stringer said, “The goal was for Fordham to co-exist with the community. This is going to enable Fordham to grow, and that benefits the city."

The Chronicle of Higher Education released its annual salary survey of the heads of educational institutions and the value of a college education is evidenced in the paychecks being cashed by institutions' presidents. More than a dozen heads of private universities took home more than $1 million during the 2005-06 school year. According to the New York Post, the dean of higher earning was Donald Ross, who took home $5.7 million--most in deferred compensation after...

Elected officials, including U.S. Congressman Jerrold Nadler, are speaking out against the proposed expansion of Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus, directly south of the performing arts complex. The school wants to add 1.5 million square feet of building space to the midtown campus, which includes an undergraduate college and its law school, between Columbus and Amsterdam Aves., nearly tripling the complex's size from the current 800,000 square feet. Fordam gets to avoid complicated issues of eminent domain and displacing current residents, since it already owns all the property that it would like to build on.

John Scurti is an actor originally from Long Island and a graduate of Fordham University. He currently he plays Lt. Kenny “Lou” Shea on FX's Rescue Me. We recently talked with him about the show, filming in the city and of course if he really does yoga.

Congratulations to everyone graduating this month! As NYU's commencement was today, with speaker jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, we decided to list the many NYC commencement speakers, with help from The Chronicle of Higher Education (if we've missed any or gotten it wrong, let us know in comments):

They say that the best way to learn a language is by immersion, but what about a Spanish teacher who may have taken a student on a getaway to the Dominican Republic? The Daily News reveals that the Department of Education is investigating a teacher of doing just that - and the allegations are spurred by a fellow teacher who was staying at the same hotel. Apparently the teacher who saw teacher Johnny Cuevas and student Alenny Mercado told the principal of Harlem's A.Philip Randolph High School about the sighting last year. In fact, Principal Maurice Collins was told twice. Collins spoke to Cuevas, who denied the incident, in May 2005, but the principal didn't make a report. From the Daily News:

Collins told Cuevas Jan. 4 not to tell school investigators about that May meeting, fearing he would get in trouble for not making a report, Cuevas said in a notarized statement to investigators.

Dorm life has many perks for college kids: Proximity to your peers, distance from your parents, an introduction for many kids to independent living. It also has a some similar perks for viruses: Proximity to young, generally unhygienic, fresh meat. As such, you know that college is back in full swing when the first round of bugs start hitting the college kids.
