For those of you who consider the Grammys an actual, legitimate measure of musical talent (Simpsons fans, please sit down), you may like to check out the just-announced full list of this year's nominees. For everyone else, here's a small sampling of what to care just a little bit about.
Five Grammy Nominations Worth Caring About
Yes Virginia, Rock Still Lives: The Foo Fighters Play MSG
When you look at the top selling songs on iTunes, you'll come across some pop singles, redundant hip-hop club bangers, a few pop-country tracks, plenty of glitzy dance numbers, and maybe a song that falls into the "rock" category. Seldom do you find a song or band that can actually be called "rock and roll" (if that "vanilla" genre of music even exists anymore). Thankfully, we have the Foo Fighters for that—arguably the last American rock and roll band*.
The Foo Fighters Have An Amazing Coloring Book Rider
The Foo Fighters recently stopped by New York City for their Garage Tour (they won't be back in the area until September, when they play... New Jersey). And with new tours (especially when it's been 2.5 years since your last), come new riders. Perhaps being scared off by the Smoking Gun's ability to get their hands on these things (hello, Katy Perry), they created a fun 52-page coloring book rider. Which, of course, the Smoking Gun also got a hold of; they say it "reaches new heights of absurdist brilliance." Even with the coloring book format, however, you still get the idea that the Foo Fighters are maybe a little too particular about their ice.
Following Top Chef Judging, Foo Fighters Rider Fun
Wonder what the Top Cheftestants were in for on the road with the Foo Fighters (in the episode that aired) the other night? Check out this recent concert rider from the band, which The Smoking Gun found out the Foo's tour manager made funny so it's "interesting to the woman in Oklahoma City who has to go out and get the hummus." The rider includes soup, of course ("every lunch should include a soup of the day--please try to to make it a vegetarian selection. Meaty soups make roadies fart."), which was the surprise twist of the Quickfire challenge this week when the band guest-hosted. Too bad the cheftestants didn't have to come up with a "healthy cookie" though, which the Foo's also demand a box of on their list.
Grant Achatz Discusses His Top Chef Stint
Chef Grant Achatz of Alinea in Chicago appeared alongside the Foo Fighters on last night’s Thanksgiving themed Top Chef New York episode (which was actually filmed last summer). Reached last night by telephone, Achatz himself was settling in for Thanksgiving Eve. Spoiler-free insights below.
Top Chef Takes on Turkey--and Foo Fighters
Last night, Top Chef aired its Thanksgiving-themed episode that featured a holiday meal for the Foo Fighters--and their entourage--as the Elimination Challenge. Grant Achatz, named Best Chef in the U.S. by the James Beard Foundation last year for his Chicago restaurant Alinea, was the guest judge for both the Quickfire and Elimination challenges.
Top Chef: New York Revealed, Meet the Cheftestants!
The fifth season of Top Chef has wrapped up its not-so-secret production in New York City and is set to premiere with a "super-sized" episode on November 12th, Bravo announced today. Padma Lakshmi will once again join head judge Tom Colicchio (who made news yesterday with his forthcoming Tuesday night supper "club"). Gail Simmons from Food & Wine Magazine is also a judge, but perhaps the biggest surprise here is the addition of Toby Young, author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, which was recently given the Hollywood treatment.
Prince Will Rock You
Who doesn't love an over the top Half Time show? Prince certainly helped deliver an elaborate one during last night's game, starting things off with some good 'ol pyrotechnics. As the rain came down, people charged the field as he started to play a medley of past hits (his own songs, as well as Foo Fighters, Dylan and more).
DJ On The 8's
Gothamist remembers the day well. We were rolling out of bed, late for a meeting and still longing for more sleep. We flipped on the Weather Channel to help us decide what grade of heavy jacket we were going to need for the morning’s blustery walk to work. The clock struck 8 after, and we focused our attention on the “accurate and dependable” local forecast greeting us with a pleasant familiarity. But as the forecast began, we lost all focus. What was this??? Is this… Phish… on the Weather Channel? Surely not. They would never play this… Indeed, they did. The Weather Channel, long known for its dreamy, mind numbing elevator music landscaped local forecasts, had made a noticeable change. That change was Steve Hurst.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
So far, the work of Charlie Kaufman has only been adapted by two directors: Spike Jonze, with Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, and Michel Gondry, whose Human Nature was tepidly received but has directed the eagerly awaited 2004 release, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Eternal Sunshine stars Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, and Mark Ruffalo, with Carrey as a man trying to erase memories of ex-girlfriend Winslet from his mind. And by the looks of the trailer, it looks like vintage Kaufman AND Gondry, with tiny human bodies in normal size enviroments.
Last Nirvana Member Standing
Now, the world is left with Dave Grohl as the only remaining performing member of Nirvana: Krist Noveselic is leaving the music business. He writes on the website of his current band, Eyes Adrift:
Dave Grohl and Jack Black As You Never Wanted To See Them
The Foo Fighters' new video, Low, will not be shown on MTV, because it depicts some very disturbing scenes with frontman Dave Grohl and funny man Jack Black, which NME summarizes well:
