When food trucks started getting kicked out of pretty much every neighborhood in Manhattan, a handful of vendors decided to take their business across the Hudson and set up shop in Hoboken. There was already a thriving food truck scene in the city prior to the Manhattan crackdown, but now, even New Jersey is putting the kibosh on mobile food vendors, setting up some crazy hoops for vendors to jump through.

"Master Of Disguise Food" Vendor Racked Up $90,000 In Health Violations
A Queens food vendor who allegedly used the power of a foreign name to help him escape from $90,000 in health violations has been busted, after switching one too many letters around. It's kind of like that time no one knew how to spell "Gadhafi", but with more street meat.
Food Truck Crackdown Accelerates With New Restrictions
Earlier this week, we heard the rumblings of some new legislation designed to curb the spread of mobile food vendors, who have already been facing down opponents in Midtown, the Upper West Side and Park Slope. Today, the Post reports that UWS Councilwoman Gale Brewer has indeed introduced a new bill, requiring the Department of Health to report the number of permits it issues each year to food trucks and carts, as part of a larger plan to regulate trucks overall. We spoke to Brewer to find out what exactly her beef with food trucks and carts is:

Take A Midnight Tour Of Roosevelt Ave Street Eats
While street vendors have had a rough go of things lately in Manhattan, over in Queens they're doing just fine, as evidenced by the throngs of carts and trucks lining Roosevelt Avenue in Jackson Heights, Elmhurst and Corona. There are hundreds of carts, serving up everything from tacos to ceviche to paan. Don't know where to start? That's where "Queens Qustodian" Jeff Orlick comes in.
Taco Truck Towed While Protesting Taco Truck Fines
Patty's Taco Truck, a popular spot usually parked on the Upper East Side, was towed yesterday. Unfortunately, Patty and company were in the middle of a rally against the city's street vendor fines when it happened. Cops charged them for selling merchandise in front of a parking meter, which yes, is illegal [pdf] and towed the truck away from about 20 protesters who had gathered. Truck co-owner Alberto Loera told the Post, "It's unfair, the cops will give you a ticket for anything." Protesters reportedly chanted, "We're hungry for justice" as the truck was hauled away, but they were also probably hungry for lunch.

Food Truck Vendors Lash Out at Proposed City Council Bill
Yesterday the City Council held a hearing on proposed legislation that would revoke food truck vendors’ licenses if they received more than three parking tickets per year (which is common). Some 60 people packed the hearing room, which was ultimately closed due to overcapacity. Miss Softee live-blogged the rancorous meeting for Midtown Lunch, the Post covered it, and Diner's Journal dropped 1,265 words on the debate. To help you sort out your feelings on this divisive issue, here are our five favorite comments made during the public hearing:
Green Cart Initiative Having Tough Time in "Food Deserts"
Despite dispatching 84 fresh produce carts all over Brooklyn, those located in low-income areas aren't doing so well. Though they're often one of the only places to find fresh fruit and vegetables in the area, one vendor in Bed-Stuy told the Daily News that in a half hour "I haven't sold one penny." The city made 350 permits available for carts in Brooklyn, but has been having a hard time getting vendors to bite, with food policy coordinator Ben Thomases already having said, "It's a good business...you are not going to get rich doing it." Well, with that kind of endorsement...
Citing Terrorist Threat, Cops Make Schnitzel Truck Leave
First, the cops were removing bikes along the President's motorcade path...now they're kicking out the Schnitzel & Things truck from a spot at East 54th Street and Lexington Avenue because of...a terrorist threat? Schnitzel & Things Tweeted, "Dear all, we've been kicked out by cops because of complaints from citicorp. The reason they gave = 'we are a terrorist threat' Lol WTF????"
Street Food Vendor Slashed in Halal "Mafia" Hit
The turf war between between rival food vendors got bloody Wednesday when a halal chicken vendor allegedly cut his rival's arm on East 37th Street. We've previously heard about the feared "Halal Mafia" and wondered how far they'd go in defending their turf. All the way, it seems: Walid Osman, 32, says Halal chicken vendor Mohamed Hanafi threatened to kill him. The trouble started in August, when Osman, who'd previously peddled hot dogs, started selling chicken. When he refused to stop, Hanafi moved his cart right up in Osman's face, where he started selling chicken for half what Osman was charging. The tension finally boiled over Wednesday, when a Hanafi employee, Farajat Yehia, allegedly slashed Osman across the arm with a butcher knife. That employee and Hanafi's business partner were charged with assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. But Hanafi tells the Post that Osman used to work for him and signed an agreement that he would never run a chicken cart. He also says Osman cut himself. Osman, who was treated at the scene, insists he signed the agreement under duress. He's vowed to return to his spot today and keep fucking with that chicken guy.
