In case you haven't noticed because we live in a city and all, we're at the tail end of peak foliage season! Get yourself to a park (here are some suggestions) to soak up that last bit of autumnal splendor. After all, when beautiful dying leaf season is over, all we've got are dead trees.

Where To Look At Leaves This Fall
When we last checked in on the fall foliage reports it was late September, when everything was still in the green. But now that the leaves have started to die their colorful deaths, it's time to check in again. According to Weather.com's map, we are seeing "patchy" colors right now, but the orange "mid peak" color band is getting very close to New York City on their map. And over at I Love NY's site, they have us down for "just changing." So, where can leaf peepers spot some color:
Fall Foliage Is Coming Our Way
I ♥ NY has updated their foliage report (they do this once a week), and it looks like we're still in the green for now. They note, "On Long Island, foliage spotters in the Hamptons expect 25 percent color change. Look for dull yellow and dark gold leaves. Nassau County and western Suffolk County expect minimal change, with a few maple trees starting to change color. New York City has not begun to change color yet." And in part of the Catskills, you can expect 65-70 percent color change.
Peak Foliage Spotted At Brooklyn Botanic Garden
According to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is lookin' pretty good right about now. They write: "Right now the Native Flora Garden is at the apex of its autumnal display. The maples are just starting to turn in the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, and at the start of Cherry Walk, the air is perfumed with the delicious caramel scent of Cercidiphyllum japonicum, or katsura tree. Even the Garden’s deciduous bonsai are showing their colors—in miniature." Get there before we settle into a winter of bare branches... and if you spot any colorful leaves in any of the five boroughs, send us your photos or tag them "Gothamist" on Flickr!
Did Pretty Foliage Cause Ugly Delays?
Fall foliage is pretty much to subways what Canadian geese are to airplanes...allegedly. According to the NY Times, transit officials have plastered at least 500 signs along three subway lines recently regarding the falling leaves, which are crushed by trains and create a “slippery residue.”
Fall Foliage Hitting Its Peak in NYC
The leaves have been turning, and falling, all over New York. You can still track the foliage here, or just get thee to a more nature-heavy nook in your borough (but make it quick). And don't forget to send us your photos or tag them 'gothamist' on Flickr!
Your Foliage Update
It's been a few weeks since we've checked in on the foliage situation, and after seeing these hidden patches of color at the NY Times, we got a little worried we might be missing out on the changes. So, we turned to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden horticulturists, who gave us these helpful tips if you can't make it out of town this season:
Track Foliage as Autumn Arrives
The foliage is coming! The foliage is coming! And soon everything will look like a happy little burnt-sienna-filled Bob Ross painting. Now that the dog days of summer are officially behind us, we'll get a short burst of brisk fall weather and trees bursting with color (even in the Bronx) before winter freezes us over. Kottke points to a foliage map so you don't miss the leaves turning; you can even become and ambassador and give reports from your location (right now we're still green).
The Great Pumpkin Comes to Town
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is airing on ABC tonight...set your DVRs, or sit yourself down at 8 p.m. sharp. The special is also available on YouTube, of course, but it's just not the same as seeing it in Prime Time. Stay tuned to see if this year Charlie Brown really does kick that football...
Foliage Peaking Upstate, Boats Can Take You There
The weather's looking lovely, just lovely this weekend, so let's just forget all about that big scary financial drama being acted out by those Wall Street divas and get the hell out of town. Fall foliage is reaching its peak in the Adirondacks and northern New England this weekend, and the Catskills and Berkshires are also just about to peak, according to the state's offical leaf peepers.
