We said that there would be rain this weekend. But wow, there was a LOT of rain yesterday! How much was there? Why, enough to smash the record for most rainfall recorded at JFK in one day by well over an inch! By 9 p.m. last night the National Weather Service had recorded 8" of rain at the airport. A head above the previous record—6.3" in one day set June 30, 1984. And the hurricane-like rainfall was not so good to the tristate area's infrastructure.
Pakistani New Yorkers Feeling Impact of Floods
Floods and mudslides have killed an estimated 1,100 people in northwestern Pakistan since Thursday, and many Pakistani immigrants in New York have been left without contact to their families. Jahanger Khan, who lives in Midwood and sends money to his wife and seven kids in Pakistan, says his family has been left homeless. "Everything's gone. There's no transportation, no electricity, no food." He hasn't been able to reach his wife for days. Now, officials in Pakistan are worried the lack of drinking water could be spreading diseases. Syed Zahir Ali Shah, health minister for Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, said, "We estimate that about 100,000 people, mostly children, have been hit by cholera and gastro diseases."

In a case of gilding a withered lily, the MTA is improving service to New York City transit riders by more effectively informing them when routes will be obstructed, interrupted, and otherwise delayed. It's almost become a cliche that subway service becomes interrupted when the weather turns bad, or if any technological problem crops up. Now the MTA is offering to ameliorate its shortcomings by informing riders of service interruptions with text and email updates....
