Yesterday's Parade of Ships help begin the 22nd annual Fleet Week celebrations. Today's events include viewing of ships at Pier 45 in Manhattan and the Stapleton Pier in Staten Island, USMC/Air Ground airborne insertion/extraction of helicopters with combat Marines in Coney Island and Marine Day—with martial arts demonstrations and military working dogs (!)—in Central Park. Plus, at the Intrepid, it's the reopening of the Growler! More details here.

Joan Jett Checks Out Fleet Week

Fleet Week is officially kicked off, with today's Parade of Ships and the military flyover. You'll be seeing thousands of sailors, marines, and members of the Coast Guard around town over the next week—and you can also see them at special events (more details here). The event celebrates the sea services and yesterday rocker Joan Jett met some servicemen and servicewomen as she toured the USS Iwo Jima.

Get Ready Because Fleet Week Starts Tomorrow

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the 22nd annual Fleet Week celebrations, which run through May 27. Thousands of sailors, marines, and Coast Guardsmen from the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard will be on hand during this celebration of sea services. At 10 a.m., there will be a Parade of Ships, which will pass the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, proceed north through New York Harbor and the Hudson River, and to the George Washington Bridge. The ships will pass the WTC site between 11 a.m. and noon, and, according to the Navy, "each ship will render honors in memory of the sacrifices made on Sept. 11, 2001." And, there will also be a military flyover as part of the festivities—don't freak out!

Fleet Week is upon us, but it's smaller (that's what she said!) than past year's events because nuclear-powered craft is not allowed in the harbor. Therefore, many of the Navy's newer aircraft carriers aren't here.

Thousands of Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen will be descending on New York City as Fleet Week 2008 starts tomorrow. This year's flotilla includes five American warships and three Canadian ships, and there will be opportunities for the public to tour ships and see public demonstrations.

The Navy's ship has come in - as well as the ships for the Marine Corps and other military aircraft - today is the start of Fleet Week! It's a great time of the year, when people get to visit various ships and aircraft AND admire men and women in uniform. Ships are docked at Pier 90 in Manhattan and at Stapleton Pier in Staten Island and are open to the public. Here's a Fleet Week Schedule of Events (PDF) and some highlights:

  • Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: an attempted abduction at Balcolm and Barkley Aves. in the Bronx, loose horses on Tremont Ave. in the Bronx, and a school bus fire at the toll booth plaza of the Throgsneck Bridge in the Bronx.
  • Not showing a lot of confidence in the Ivy Leaguers he was cheating money from, Columbia's student-aid head wrote emails to the loan company he held stock in outlining that he needed an "idiot-proof way" to send students to Student Loan Xpress for their educational loans.
  • Get ready for Fleet Week. It begins this Wednesday with the Parade of Ships up the Hudson.
  • A fascinating story on the development of DUMBO and how the neighborhood came about its name. It was conceived by a group of drunken writers and artists one night as a way to make the area seem unattractive or embarrassing to people looking to buy million-dollar residences there.
  • Bernie Williams met chants of "Bernie! Bernie!" as he received an honorary degree and addressed the graduation ceremony at Iona this weekend. Mets Manager Willie Randolph also received an honorary degree and addressed graduating students, but at Fordham, where his own daughter was one of the graduates.
  • Edward R. Murrow High School's renowned chess team, dubbed "Kings of New York" and the subject of a recent book, was beaten by a team of middle-schoolers from Williamsburg's I.S. 318 at the Brooklyn High School Chess Championship over the weekend.
  • NY1 looks at the changes that have occurred in Red Hook, Brooklyn over the past 15 years, and the murder of a popular school principal that seemed to mark the community's turning point.

Reader Njoki (whom some of you may remember from Eugene Mirman's music quiz during Laughable Hype) let us know she had some photographs of the Intrepid today. And it was for a special event - a swearing-in of new American citizens, with special guest Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez (maybe not so much "woo!" but still interesting that he made it up here). What a day to be worn in on the Intrepid, as immmigration and the Intrepid are in the news.

Ha! It turns out a lot of New Yorkers had no idea what was going on with the fighter jets doing fly-bys over NYC skies yesterday, causing 850 calls to 311. According to AM New Yorker, the operators' script read, "These flyovers are part of Fleet Week and there is no cause for concern." And the Intrepid's spokesperson said, "It's just Fleet Week. Everyone knows it's Fleet Week." But that's the thing: When we think Fleet Week, we don't immediately think of jets in the sky - we think boats and sailors.

I live in the UWS. Woke up to a huge plane sound going over our building headed North around 9:15am. The plane was tailed by 6 fighters.

Get ready, 'cause Fleet Week begins tomorrow. There are many events planned through May 31, with a Parade of Ships tomorrow in the Hudson River (the parade is at 11:30AM, though there's a "salute to the ships" at Bluff at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn at 8AM). The Intrepid has a bunch of Fleet Week events, like the Tug of War on Saturday and Best Chow competition on Sunday.

Somehow the Fringe Festival is over, though we’re not quite sure how so many shows could have flown by so quickly. Gothamist isn’t quite done with it yet, though – we still have a couple of reviews from the final weekend, plus some musings on the festival as a whole and how it’s looking at the advanced age of nine (keep reading after the jump). And before we launch into that, let’s give a hearty yowp of congratulations to the winners of the 14 industry-judged awards (the whole list is here; we still haven’t heard about the results of the audience ballot). Gothamist was pleased to see that Movie Geek got the “outstanding multimedia” prize and that God’s Waiting Room was one of three winners in the play category, along with The Lightning Field and Go-Go Kitty, Go!, which we didn’t think quite so worthy. We also rolled our eyes at the inclusion of Fluffy Bunnies in the outstanding ensemble award group, but felt justified in our praise of Jesus in Montana and The Miss Education of Jenna Bush, for which Barry Smith and Melissa Rauch respectively took honors (with two other shows) in the outstanding solo category. Finally (well, there are more awards, but go to the list already if you’re interested) after their loads of hype, Silence! and Fleet Week predictably got the musical honors. Gothamist isn’t in the know enough to have heard about extensions that might be forthcoming, but it’s pretty safe to say that if you didn’t make it to one of these top shows during the festival, you’ll be able to at some point in the near future, or at least some variation on them.

start today, with a Parade of Ships at 10AM today, and runs through Memorial Day, Monday, May 30th. There are different events throughout, including public tours of the different ships coming to NYC, with many activities on the Intrepid, including the Tug of War on Saturday and Best Chow on Sunday (Intrepid schedule).
