New Restaurants on the Radar: Opia, Ben & Jack's Steakhouse, Ortine's Garden

Opia: With eight years under their belts, the owners of this popular French restaurant recently gave the place a major facelift, reopening last week with three expanded terraces, two private rooftop decks, and a private banquet room. But it's not just about a new look; they've also brought on new Executive Chef Ted Pryor (formerly of La Goulue, Orsay and Les Halles) to streamline the menu. While keeping popular offerings like the “Sushi Corner” and “Le Coin Japonais,” Pryor has brought in signature dishes like his Crab Cake made with buttery brioche and served with celery remoulade. There's also a three-way Battle Royale between L’American Sliders with American cheese, onions and pickles on a potato roll; Le French Sliders with BĂ©arnaise and ComtĂ© cheese on a Brioche roll; and Le Lobster Sliders with fresh lobster meat, chives and chervil. Opia's open for breakfast through dinner Monday through Friday, with brunch and dinner on the weekends. 130 East 57th Street, (212) 688-3939

License ID scanners aren't just keeping underage drinkers out of New York bars, they're now assisting police in arresting patrons who become involved in criminal activity both inside and outside of city clubs. The New York Post reports that the electronic scanners which help filter out fake IDs also supply cops with detailed records of every patron who entered a bar or club on any given evening.

The woes of the downtown club scene continue to follow, even as the clubs themselves migrate eastward. Last night a 25-year-old man was stabbed to death outside of the Flatiron District club Strata. The man was stabbed in the torso and taken to St. Vincent's Hospital where he died from his injuries. Strata is a multi-level dance club at Broadway and 21st St. The name of the victim was not disclosed to reporters because his family had not been notified of his death. Police took one person into custody for questioning, although it was unclear whether the individual was a witness to the stabbing or a suspect.

We're just going to get this out of the way: Justin Timberlake is bringing deep-fried pickle-sicles back. The modern day song and dance man has gone and opened his very own restaurant called Southern Hospitality (at 1460 2nd Ave and 76th St). It opened last night to a crowd of A-listers people you may have heard of, hankering for some barbecue. Amongst the items offered are deviled eggs, pulled pork, mac-n-cheese, fried catfish, and yes...the aforementioned pickle treat (we hope JT took his indigestion pills last night).

A week and a half ago, three people, including two boys, were caught when a Bronx building's parapet collapsed on top of them. Hundreds of pounds of concrete fell from a building on Grand Concourse near 183rd Street; 10-year-old Damion Hope Rosa's left leg was partially severed, and doctors later amputated it below the knee.

Rapper Fabolous was shot in the Flatiron District this morning. Fabolous is now in stable condition, after being shot in the thigh, - and he's under arrest as well. WABC 7 reports that a fight had spilled out from Justin's Restaurant (which is owned by P. Didddy), and the shooting occured in a parking garage nearby. The reports have been a little confusing, but it looks like after Fabolous was shot, three of his friends put him in a car to take him to the hospital. But they ran a red light at Third Avenue and East 22nd Street, and the police pulled them over and found two unlicensed, loaded weapons. Fabolous did make it to Bellevue Hospital, as charges are pending against him and his friends.

-The Yankees beat the Red Sox today 8-4 guaranteeing them the the AL East Divison Title.

It's true there was a time when the area around Union Square was pretty honky tonk; crack dealers owned the park, and 99-cent stores, fast food chains and psychics were pretty much the only business on 14th Street. At the time, it was hardly the neighborhood for a high-end spa, and could have been aptly decribed as "gritty."
