Performance artist and activist Bill Talen, AKA Reverend Billy, has been raising hell in New York City for so long now it’s hard to imagine this town without him. Since first seizing his sidewalk pulpit in the late 90s to combat the Disneyfication of Times Square, the reverend has been consistently down with a host of local and international progressive causes. With the help of his raucous Stop Shopping Gospel Choir, he also puts on a hilarious and inspirational theatrical show. (Not to take anything away from Other Love, his quite moving solo piece.) November will see the release of a documentary concerning the cross-country travels of Reverend Billy and his choir, What Would Jesus Buy?, produced by Morgan Spurlock of Supersize Me fame. Tonight the Reverend brings his righteous lefty heat to Gothamist House; all are invited to come on down and testify.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial - Maya Lin with Cooper-Lecky PartnershipNew Yorkology has a list of the NYC structures in the top 150, and looking at what both the public and architects (they made some pre-selects), the rankings are all over the place. Sure, the Brooklyn Bridge is #20 and the Woolworth Building is #44. But the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue ranks #53, higher than the Flatiron Building (#72). Heck, even the new Hearst Tower ranks ahead of the Flatiron!

Some single guy has purchased a $20,000 per month billboard at the Midtown Tunnel to help find a wife. Basically, it directs people to go to his website, see-tom (it'll launch at noon)... which makes Gothamist think this is a reverse Jason Mulgrew! The Daily News story on Tom Barrella says that it's not a publicity stunt for the former record executive/ former computer businessman/ current high school teacher and that he really wants to find someone. Yeah, and after he finds someone, THEN he'll write the book. Gothamist can't really trust anyone who would buy a billboard to find a wife... now, using craiglist or eBay is another story. Plus, isn't he worried that people will just ignore his billboard, because they will think it's about Tom Cruise? And what women are really looking at the Midtown Tunnel's billboards - they are busy putting on their makeup. He should have shelled out for a quality location, like at least the Flatiron Building. Updated: And our friends across the Pond at Londonist remind us that some guy set up a stall to find a lady this June! God, is the new black for men to be freaking out about getting married? Why can't things be back to normal, with just women being worried they won't find someone.

You'd think that being a tourist from Baltimore, you'd be able to get away from shootings, but on Saturday, a woman visiting from Charm City was shot during a botched robbery. A group of men were trying to steal DVDs and CDs from a vendor at 1204 Broadway, around 29th Street, a building full of vendors; Newsday reported that two men argued with the vendor about the movie selection, in order to distract him while others could steal CDs. The vendor called 911, but then the robbers beat him up as the argument moved outside and then they tried shoot him, shooting 25 year-old Sheria Guster of Baltimore instead. Guster had been on a Flatiron shopping tour, and ended up going to St. Vincent's Hospital for her single bullet wound. She was released from the hospital yesterday. While reports say that Guster was alert and even smiled when an ambulance took her, another person on her tour said, "It turned out to be a terrible shopping day," which is a Lennie Briscoe-ism if we ever heard one; thank goodness Guster is all right. At any rate, two men were charged in connection to the crime yesterday, but the police are still awaiting ballistics results.

Here's official word on the Flatiron Building's temporary H&M ad: It must come down. The Department of Buildings and Flatiron Partners, which owns the 23rd Street icon, are squabbling over the legality of the sign; the DoB thinks it violates a number of things while the owners are counting their money. The sign won't come down until the city files notice in Albany and then goes to court over it, which might not happen overnight. The irony is that the sign is only supposed to be up for a month, which might make the point moot. Ah, bureaucracy!

It should be breezy today and tomorrow. While Gothamist thinks breezy is a fun word to say aloud, its use indicates that not much is happening weatherwise. We may see some clouds from Tropical Storm Nicole as it moves northward toward Nova Scotia, and later in the week we may get some rain as what remains of Tropical Depression Matthew, which dumped craploads of rain on Louisiana, gets caught up in a trough of low pressure as the trough moves through our area on Thursday.

New York magazine looks at the new hanger steak (apparently, the hanger steaks are the old black in the beef world) to wow chefs, the Flatiron Steak. Worried that the Flatiron Steak was some attempt to ride the Flatiron Building train, the Flatiron Steak is named so because, like the Flatiron Building, it looks like a flatiron. NY says Flatiron steak is "remarkably flavorful, surprisingly tender, and�most important�cheap cut from the shoulder." Restaurants serving the steak du jour are Jane, Sunburnt Cow (137 Avenue C /212-529-0005), WD-50, Dominic Restaurant/Social Club and Cub Room.
