Flatbush School Attacked By Bedbugs 31 Times In A Year
PS 361 in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn has been attacked by bedbugs for the 31st time in one year, further evidence that the Department of Education should start declaring "bedbug days" to clear the way for exterminators.
Video: Broad Daylight Shooting Near Brooklyn College
And here we have chilling silent surveillance video of a Tuesday afternoon shooting outside a McDonald's on Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn, a block from Brooklyn College. In what the Daily News is calling an "artful rubout" attempt, three unidentified men pass a revolver hand-to-hand and then open fire on a fourth teen at point-blank range. But despite holding the gun inches from Tyquan Sewall's 18-year-old head, the gunman missed, grazing the side of his head. And though he connected on the follow-up shots, he failed to kill Sewall, who rolled out into the street, bleeding from the stomach, leg, and groin.
Brooklyn DA: "Aware Of Increase In Gang Activity" In Parks
Following reports of a "turf war" between residents and roving bands of teenagers in Brower Park and the Park Slope Playground, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes is seeking to assuage fears that his office is out of touch with the issue. "We are definitely aware of the increase in gang activity in parks and playgrounds," Hynes's spokesperson Jerry Schmetterer told the Daily News. According to Schmetterer, the DA's Gang's Bureau is "monitoring their activity. And we are in touch with the community about it."
Video: Deafening Flatbush Tent Revival Is Better Than Gunshots
Every night this month the Gospel Tabernacle Church is holding an old-timey tent revival in a vacant lot in Flatbush, where people are getting RIGHT WITH GOD at very high volumes. But some of the wicked heathens who reside in the neighborhood say all this righteousness is disturbing their sinful, slothful peace. Others, with a little prompting from a local TV news reporter, agree the noisy revival sure beats the sound of gunshots. Here's NBC New York's amusing segment on the Tent Crusade 2011:
Where Are The Greenest Blocks In Brooklyn?
The winners of the Greenest Blocks in Brooklyn, the annual contest (now in its 17th year!) put on by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, have been announced, and a round of applause is in order for our eco-minded neighbors. Top honors this year go to Flatbush and Boerum Hill, much like last year, but with different blocks (E 25th Street between Clarendon Road and Avenue D and Atlantic Avenue between Bond Street and Nevins Street, respectively).
Naked Man Holds Son Hostage, Sets Fire To Tree
We're sensing a trend; if someone runs a red light, chances are they're up to something much worse. A 26-year-old father has been arrested after running a red light, leading cops on a chase that ended in his holding his 2-month-old son "hostage" and setting his family's Christmas tree on fire. Tredon Mann was charged with felony assault, assaulting an officer and arson after the debacle, which began last night with him running a red light at a Flatbush intersection and smashing his car into another van.
Residents Worry About Flatbush Serial Rapist
News of the serial rapist who has apparently attacked three women in their apartment buildings near the same corner—Bedford and Flatbush Avenues—has residents, especially females, concerned. One 18-year-old Kingsborough Community College student told the Daily News, "I'm very scared. I'm scared to go out at night. I'll be looking around and making sure that no one is following me, and I won't be by myself," while another high school student who lives a block away, "I'm going to walk home with a group of friends, especially on late nights."

Police have released a sketch of a man believed to be involved in three rapes in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn between 2008 and this year. Apparently all three victims were attacked in buildings near the same corner of Flatbush and Bedford Avenues.
Friends Claim Gang Slay Was Case Of Mistaken Identity
An aspiring police officer was fatally shot in Brooklyn yesterday morning, and his family and friends believe he was murdered by gang members in a case of mistaken identity. Former John Jay student Terrence Mahabir, 22, was shot twice in the chest and police say they have yet to determine a motive. But his friends say Mahabir was mistaken for friend Rolan Angaroo, who tried to pin a gun rap on a member of a Brooklyn gang known as the Outlaws. "My brother's afraid for his life. He never leaves the house anymore. These guys don't care about killing people. If they want you dead, you're dead. They must have got them confused. But they were targeting my brother," said Cadian McDonald, Angaroo's 35-year-old brother.
Rent Is Too Damn High Candidate's Rent Is Actually Low
Jimmy McMillan, the mustachioed and gloved gubernatorial candidate who debate- karate chopped his way into the zeitgeist with his rousing rhetoric, "The Rent is TOO DAMN HIGH," has been chatting with dozens of media outlets about his breakout performance during Monday's debate. But now it turns out that his own rent for a one-bedroom in Flatbush is just $800/month—and the NY Times reports, "Mr. McMillan said in an interview on Tuesday that for at least the last decade, he had lived rent free. 'We’re like family,” Mr. McMillan said of his landlords. 'They don’t want me to pay any money at all. I am basically living there rent free.'" Can he work his magic for the rest of us?!?
One Arrested, One Sought In Flatbush Sexual Assault
Police arrested a suspect in a June 2 sexual assault of a 19-year-old woman in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. According to WABC 7, the woman was walking near Linden Boulevard and Bedford Avenue around 2 a.m. "when police say 20-year-old Rony Delmas grabbed her and forced her between 2 parked cars where he sexually assaulted her. Delmas then allegedly walked her several blocks to a secluded area located on Parkside Avenue, where she was raped. The second suspect, identified by police as 20-year-old Stephon Edwards, showed up and then he also raped the victim according to investigators." Delmas was arrested and police are looking for Edwards, who is "described as a black male, 5'6" tall and 120 lbs."
Son Sues Mother For "Terroristic Binge" Over Wife
A man has filed a suit against his mother for allegedly attempting to break him and his wife up. Lia Joseph allegedly went too far in her quest to prove that her son's wife, Diana David, was a gold digger that she got David fired from her job and lied to her sick father. One source told the Post her quest "seems to be some sort of twisted Freudian thing."
Timeless Look at Brooklyn Vodou Party
For the past year or so, photographer Stephanie Keith has been going to the Flatlands in Brooklyn for dead-of-night vodou ceremonies. Her audio slide show about her experiences is killer. While we've been sleeping the night away, she's been dancing to drumming and watching spirit possession in a rum-soaked basement. By the end of one "party" there were about seven people all possessed at the same time! Unfortunately, she wasn't allowed to take pictures when the Gede spirit "mounted" participants, but still got off some great shots. "I keep telling my friends I wish I could get mounted by a spirit, but that never happened," Keith wistfully remarks. She's actually attended ten vodou ceremonies so far, but Gede is still playing hard to get. [Via Boing Boing]
Loew's Kings Theater Will Get $70MM Makeover
There's been much discussion about reviving old theaters in town lately, with the Ridgewood Theater getting landmark status and the Loew's in Chinatown getting refurbished into a community center. Now Brooklyn's Loew's Kings Theater is getting some attention after rotting away since 1977—the NY Times notes that its current state includes a "rusting, dirt-caked marquee," a cobweb-filled deteriorated interior, and plenty of vandal and pigeon feces. You know, just your typical movie theater here in New York!

Flashback: LIRR's Old Flatbush Ave Terminal
The new Atlantic Terminal is here (officially opening yesterday), and here's a look back on the old Flatbush Avenue Terminal, which used to be the LIRR's station in the area — currently where the Atlantic Terminal Mall stands. More photos of the old station, which opened in 1907, can be seen here and here. By the late '70s "the stores and offices were unoccupied, vandals entered and their looting caused water damage so severe that the upper waiting room was closed to the public."
Awesome Dad
Why breaking and entering isn't a great idea—from the Post: "A heroic Brooklyn dad whacked a home invader with a machete after hearing his daughter's screams for help, sources said. Dwayne Johnson, 28, allegedly slipped into the house on Amersfort Place in Flatbush Monday. When the homeowner's daughter saw him and screamed, her father grabbed a machete and hit Johnson, who ran off but was caught later. Johnson was hospitalized in stable condition."

Police are searching for clues in the Sunday evening murder of 18-year-old Brian Scott. Scott, known as a one of urban inline skating's "rising stars," was fatally shot at the Parkside Donut and Kennedy Fried Chicken on Flatbush Avenue, while two others were injured. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, "We have no reason, at this time, to think that Brian Scott was anything but an innocent bystander. We are still, obviously, doing an aggressive investigation."

NYPD Chief Says We'll Never Know How Drunk DWI Cop Was
Yesterday Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly acknowledged that it will be "impossible" for prosecutors to determine how drunk an off-duty cop was when he fatally ran over a Brooklyn woman Saturday night. The family of Vionique Valnord is outraged that officer Andrew Kelly was able to successfully postpone having his blood tested for alcohol for over seven hours after the accident, and the Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating whether other officers helped him sober up. When finally tested, Kelly scored a perfect zero on the test, making the DWI charges against him problematic.
DWI Cop's Lawyer Says Cop Almost Saved Victim's Life
Amid allegations that his fellow cops helped "cover-up" his intoxication after fatally running over Vionique Valnord Saturday night, the lawyer for officer Andrew Kelly fiercely defended his client, who scored a perfect zero on his blood alcohol test, administered eight hours after the accident. Attorney Arthur Aidala told the Daily News, "To be crystal-clear, Andrew wasn't drunk. Andrew wasn't surprised by his blood-alcohol level. He knows what he did that day. He tried to save that woman. He got her breathing, and at one point, she opened her eyes. He's just sad that she's not breathing today."
DWI Cop Had No Alcohol in System When Finally Tested
After fatally running over a Brooklyn woman trying to hail a cab late Saturday night, off-duty cop Andrew Kelly successfully dragged his feet on taking a Breathalyzer or blood alcohol test for almost eight hours. And the gambit worked: When a doctor, acting on a warrant, finally drew Kelly's blood at 8 a.m., there was no alcohol in his system. Kelly has pleaded not guilty to charges of DWI and vehicular manslaughter; 32-year-old Vionique Valnord is dead.
DWI Cop Delayed Blood Alcohol Test for Seven Hours
The off-duty NYPD officer accused of DWI and vehicular manslaughter in the death of a Brooklyn pedestrian early Sunday morning managed to avoid having his blood alcohol level tested for over seven hours after the crash. As victim Vionique Valnord lay dying, officer Andrew Kelly, who was slurring his speech and reeked of alcohol, refused to take a Breathalyzer test, and told first responders he wouldn't easily submit to a blood test either: "I'm not going to let that happen," he said, according to a Daily News source. "You're going to have to tie me down."
Cop Accused of Manslaughter in Fatal DWI, Lawyer Blames Weather
Just before 1 a.m. on Sunday, Vionique Valnord, 32, was trying to hail a cab after a wedding reception in Flatbush when she was fatally struck by a Jeep Cherokee SUV; the driver was NYPD officer Andrew Kelly, 30, a seven-year veteran of the department who worked in the 68th Precinct. Four passengers in the SUV, one an off-duty cop, immediately fled the scene, but Kelly, who was off-duty, remained. His brother-in-law tells the Times that Kelly "performed CPR on the woman," and one witness tells the Post, "[Kelly] got out of the car, and he was trying to resuscitate her. He got her breathing again by the time the ambulance got here."
Mural Brings Flatbush to Life

The mural illustrates "stories and memories from senior citizens in Flatbush Brooklyn," and you can find it at the corner of Ocean and Parkside, outside of the Parkside Avenue Station.
Woman: Orthodox Ex, Rabbi 'Schmeared' Her
A Brooklyn woman tells the Post she's on the receiving end of a defamation campaign led by her ex-husband's friend, a prominent Orthodox rabbi. After Asia Teper of Marine Park separated from Shagra Kohn—both were born in Israel came to NY as teens— and took custody of their two daughters, Kohn allegedly became "ultra-Orthodox" and has been financially supported by his new rabbi friends, including Flatbush bigwig Yisroel Belsky. After the separation, Rabbi Belsky wrote a letter in the Jewish magazine , denouncing Teper's "descent into the abyss of immorality....without regard for her husband or children, she embraced a lifestyle that was, and remains to this day, the very antithesis of a Bas Yisraeli [daughter of Israel] and Aishes Chayil [woman of valor]." Belsky then went to her children's school and passed out copies of the magazine; Teper says, "Now [the school] won't talk to me. It's because I was dating someone. I wear pants and shorts when I go out jogging, and I don't cover my hair." Both Teper and Kohn (who hasn't paid $30,000 in child support and was arrested after taking their daughters out of camp and disappearing for days) have remarried.
Flatbush House Fire Kills Two
Earlier this morning, a fire engulfed a house at 3916 Avenue K in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Firefighters found two men dead inside, but 1010 WINS reports that the FNDY is "looking for more possible victims as it was reported there were other people living in the house." Two passers-by and a neighbor knocked down a door, but the flames were too great. They also tried to convince the home's residents to jump, but were unsuccessful. Anthony Deloid told WCBS 2, "They were screaming 'Lord please help me. Lord please help me.' It was him and a woman screaming. I told them to jump. They wouldn't jump. They had a chance to jump, but they wouldn't," while neighbor Kissoondial Bissoondial said, "I hear a lady was asking 'Help me. Help me.' So I kicked the door down. Me and another guy kicked the door down. We tell them to run out, that the door was open, but I didn't see anyone run out."
Insanity Plea In Brooklyn Love Triangle Murder
A woman, accused of killing her former girlfriend's husband in November 2007, has pleaded guilty by reason of insanity. The Daily News reports that Anastasiya Andreyeva explained, "The candle was burning, and I saw the face with horns and I started shaking and sweating. And then I went to approach the candle and run with it outside because the voice in my head said, 'Bring people the light.'"
Three, Including Sanitation Worker, Shot in Flatbush
Yesterday around 7 p.m., a drive-by gunman fired at three people on Lenox Road near Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn (here's video of the area after the shooting). One of the victims was a sanitation worker, in a street sweeper, who had taken a break to get a drink from a bodega. The Daily News reports that san worker Anthony Pollard "told cops he had parked his sweeper to say hello to a cousin and buy a soda at the ND Food Market, his usual spot for a nightly break." He had been standing outside the store with two other men when a car drove by and someone fired more than a dozen times at the store from inside the vehicle. Pollard was shot in the stomach while the other men were hit in the leg and elbow; their injuries are not life-threatening. Police are asking people with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or send a text message to "CRIMES," (274637), then enter "TIP577".
