Another Cab Bursts Into Flames

Yesterday afternoon a cab burst into flames on Cadman Plaza West in Brooklyn! Sure, we've seen cabs on fire before — but we still want answers as to why the Crown Victorias seem to be spontaneously combusting. The Brooklyn Eagle reports on yesterday's incident, noting it only took a few minutes before the car was engulfed in flames and charred. The driver told them he was driving two passengers over the Brooklyn Bridge when he noticed there was smoke coming out of the hood. He recalls, "It was just a little smoke. I pulled over and told the passengers to get out. When I opened the hood, I saw it was on fire so I called 911." Neither the passengers nor driver were injured. more ›

Last Night's Action: Nets Making a Move?

  • Devils 3, Panthers 2: Jamie Langenbrunner and Noah Clarke scored in the first period for the red-hot Devils. They love their new digs at the Prudential Center in Newark, where they've won nine of 10. As well as they've been playing, the Devils hadn't scored a goal in the first period in eight games. That ended Wednesday.

Last Night's Action: A Double Downer At MSG

Last Night's Action: A Double Downer At MSG

The Lakers cruised to a 70-45 lead and then had to hang on against a Knicks’ rally that happened with the unit of Nate Robinson, David Lee, Malik Rose, Jared Jeffries and Jamal Crawford playing most of the minutes. What changes are coming? It’s hard to say, but a good start would be splitting Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph up. Let’s just hope Isiah doesn’t start making trades. more ›

    Manholes Explode Upper East Side

    Manholes Explode Upper East Side

Wow - three manholes exploded dramatically yesterday afternoon. Flames shot up from manholes between East 69th Street and Second Avenue and East 70th and Third Avenue, causing traffic diversions. Luckily, no one was hurt - just totally spooked, thinking that hell was indeed underground. According to Con Ed, manholes explode when the wires' insulation overheats. Yeesh - we wonder if the manhole covers flipped up or if flames were the main problem. At any rate, Con Ed and the FDNY had to check buildings for carbon monoxide (none had alarming levels). more ›

Lord Stanley, Florida. Florida, Lord Stanley

Last night, the Tampa Bay Lightning won The Stanley Cup, defeating the Calgary Flames 2-1 in the 7th game of the NHL Finals. Led by Ruslan Fedotenko's two goals, the 12 year-old Lightning franchise won its first championship and is the first team formed in the 90's to win the Cup. There is nothing quite like a 12 year-old team winning The Stanley Cup, a trophy awarded for 111 years making it the oldest trophy in sport. The Calgary Flames franchise is also relatively young, starting in 1980 when the Atlanta Flames moved north. The Flames were attempting to become the first Canadian team to win the Cup since the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. more ›

Is Hockey the Most Demanding Playoff Sport?

Is Hockey the Most Demanding Playoff Sport?

The NBA and its players have had an absurd playoff schedule so far this season. It almost seems like they only play Thursday-Sunday and take the rest of the week off. Games are 48 minutes long, plus add on all their commercial breaks, time outs, and fouling in the final two minutes and you have plenty of rest for the players. NBA play, while physical, doesn't tend to result in concussions or many contusions at all. more ›
