After two State Assembly members sponsored a bill that would require NYPD officers to shoot to wound—not kill—perps, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly is inviting all City Council members to fire weapons at the NYPD's firing range. City Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Queens), who heads the Public Safety Committee, said, "I would recommend everyone goes. It's a very eye-opening experience, especially for anyone who thinks police officers should shoot guns out of people's hands... They should fire a gun first and see what it's like and try to avoid shooting the birds from the recoil." The Post notes that Vallone owns a rifle.

NYPD Firing Range Will Torment City Island Less
City Island residents have finally gotten rid of the NYPD firing range on nearby Rodman's Neck in the Bronx, which has been disturbing their peace since the Kennedy administration. Last week the City Council approved the site of a 40-acre Police Academy in College Point, Queens, where the NYPD will relocate training to an enclosed firing range. But some residents say their aural nightmare endures!
Cop Suing After Shooting Range 'Fires Back' at Him
A police officer is suing the NYPD after a trip to the shooting range last fall left him with a bullet to the gut after a scene the Post describes as "he fired at a paper target—and the target fired back." Detective Michael Lopresti was taking one of his semiannually required trips to the firing range in Coney Island when one of his shots deflected off the target and came back at him. While the "bad-guy silhouettes" are made of paper, the bullet may have bounced off of a metal clip holding it up. His wife told the Post, "It was a freak accident. All I remember is getting a phone call that night from my brother-in-law saying he'd been shot in the abdomen." There is no word on how much Lopresti is seeking in the suit.
