Cops Pulling Fingerprints From Beer Bottles At Midwood Hate Crime Scene

Friday morning in Midwood, on the anniversary of the end of Kristallnacht, vandals torched three cars, tried to burn a fourth, and scrawled anti-semitic graffiti on a nearby van and benches. Police are investigating the incident, which took place in the heavily Orthodox Jewish section of Ocean Parkway, as a hate crime. And they are hopeful that beer bottles left at the scene by the perps will yield some results: “We've recovered from the scene 27 empty Corona bottles, so those will be tested for fingerprints as well as DNA,” Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes said. more ›

Lennon's Prints Confiscated By FBI

The FBI is still messing with John Lennon! The late musician's fingerprints (part of his application for citizenship circa 1976) were about to hit the auction block this Saturday, but the feds seized the card yesterday after an hourlong stand-off, according to the NY Times. The owner of the shop holding the auction, Peter Siegel, said for the past week the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the United States attorney in Manhattan had been asking about the card. A spokesman for the FBI would only say that there was an “investigation into how that item came to be up for auction.” more ›

Man Busted for Pot Tries Chewing Off Fingertips

One Keith Simmonds Jr. was arrested in New Jersey Sunday night after cops found marijuana in his vehicle. But Simmonds wasn't about to go out like that, and hatched an ingenious plan to stymie police. After getting cuffed and placed in the back of the squad car, Simmonds "managed to move his handcuffed arms to the front of his body, kick out the side window of the patrol car and escape while officers used a drug-detection dog to search his car," sources tell the AP. It's unclear where he went from there, but when the cops caught him again, his fingertips were bloody—they say he was trying to remove of his fingerprints with his teeth! Either that, or he was gripped by the worst munchies ever. more ›

City Pays $145K After Jailing Man on Botched Fingerprints

City Pays $145K After Jailing Man on Botched Fingerprints

A man who was wrongly jailed on Rikers Island for 17 months has accepted a $145,000 settlement with the city because a detective misidentified his fingerprints. Dwight Gomas was residing in Atlanta in 2004 when he was suddenly arrested by U.S. marshals for an armed robbery at a Howard Beach jewelry store. Detective Eileen Barrett had matched a partial finger print from the crime scene to Gomas, whose prints were on file after his only prior arrest as an adult: driving with a suspended license in Brooklyn. Gomas maintained his innocence before a grand jury, but was indicted and couldn't make bail. Languishing on Rikers, his Legal Aid lawyer urged him to accept a plea offer of five years in prison, but he refused. Luckily, veteran detective Daniel Perruzzaa finally conducted a routine review of the fingerprints. He tells the Daily News, "When I looked at it, I said, 'You know what? This is a screwup; this is not his fingerprints." Oopsy! Gomas was released after 523 days in jail, but by then his girlfriend and their child moved in with another man. On the plus side, he pulled in $145K in less than two years on Rikers, so we're sure there's no hard feelings. more ›
