Filene's has made a tradition of brides scrambling for wedding gown steals with "The Running of the Brides," and today, there was one at the Union Square location. Racked was there and dazed reporter . Fawnia Soo Hoo wrote, "I thought I'd seen it all at sample sales, but there are girls in bras and undies everywhere and these pervy news guys are loving it. Yesterday about 200 women of all ages, some not even planning weddings, waited for hours outside Filene's Basement on the Upper West Side for the annual "Running of the Brides," where thousand-dollar gowns are sold at massive discounts. (Check out the crazy video below.) Nikki Saucier, one of the first women in, declared, "This is war! We are going to grab as many dresses as we can and head for a mirror." When the NY Times article on how the economy shrunk 6.2% last quarter starts off with, "The economy is spiraling down at an accelerating pace, threatening to undermine the Obama administration’s spending plans..." is it any surprise that over a thousand brides-to-be flocked to the Union Square Filene's Basement to participate in the "Running of the Brides"? The annual event (in NYC; it's held twice a year in Boston) offers wedding gowns—which usually retail for $700 to $10,000—at $249, $499 and $699. more ›

Early this morning brides-to-be lined 14th Street in hopes of finding their dream dress at a discount price. The annual wedding dress sale at Filene's Basement, dubbed The Running of the Brides, included around 2500 gowns (of which reportedly zero are left). And every lady wants to find the designer dress with an off-the-rack pricetag, which can be akin to finding a needle in a haystack. Typically dresses go for $249 to $699, and would normally cost around $10,000. more ›
