THEATER: Survey: Do women actually, um, enjoy Playgirl magazine? It’s a timeless question, and one that - according to former editor Ronnie Koenig - even haunted the boss herself. Her multimedia play Dirty Girl, now in previews, is about her “quest to find a woman who actually likes the beefcakes in the magazine.” The cast has been blogging and a book deal is in the works. (Brace yourself for The Devil Wears Nothing.) - John Del Signore
Seems a little early to announce anything the "Best of 2006", but the Village Voice has released their picks already.
Sometimes we wonder how magazines can compete with online publications (blogs, webzines, instant reporting). Most start blogs themselves, and people still buy the issues - much for the same reason that people still buy cd's, we'd imagine. Digital can be so impersonal. Albums, cd's, magazines...they're more of an art, and a link to a past when we couldn't access every single thing online.
To start, the sound was dreadful. From our excellent seats in the front of the balcony, we couldn't make out a single word being sung. The acoustics, which we had remembered being excellent at Town Hall, were a complete mess. The drums dominated the mix, echoing off themselves and completely washing out all vocals and most of the other instrumentals. It was a disaster. The only enjoyable moments of the show were when the drummer backed out for half a verse or so. Unfortunately, the momentary calm was usually followed by an epileptic mess of drum thrashing that ruined any sort of solace previously created. A large chunk of the already mostly empty balcony just walked out of the show mid set. (Including the couple next to us that we sold our extra tickets to outside. Sorry guys!)
Antony and the Johnsons will play their first NYC show since winning the UK's Mercury Music Prize last month. The past year has seen Antony rise from a relatively unknown eccentric NYC club performer to an international superstar. His headlining show at Carnegie Hall on Thursday, and his upcoming appearance on Letterman, are two signs of his well deserved success. Those attending the Carnegie show will also be treated to a rare opening set by vocalist Jimmy Scott, "the man whom Joseph Hooper, in a New York Times Magazine profile, called 'perhaps the most unjustly ignored American singer of the 20th century.' Hello Gothamist readers. Allow me to introduce myself. Some of you may know me as the music-obsessed blogger over at BrooklynVegan.com. Now you'll also know me as the music-obsessed blogger here at Gothamist. I'll attempt to keep you informed of the shows you don't want to miss each and every week. I'll try my best not to miss anything, not make mistakes, and bring you as much variety as possible, but unfortunately I'm only human. Work with me. Use the comment section to offer your own recommendations, suggestions, and corrections. And now on to the shows...
It seems like just a couple of months ago we were asking you to help Save Tonic. Actually, it 2 months ago - to the date, and now New York City has gone and done it. $80,000 (the clubs adjusted goal) was raised and the shows will go on! From Tonic's website:
Since this seems to be hard to grasp for some we just want to reiterate that this post is just to let you know that we've noticed a few tickets that are on sale for shows that we believe may sell out. We won't be repeating any ticket listings we posted last time, so you may want to give that list a once over as well. Also, we put a $ sign next to overpriced shows that are in no way worth the amount being charged.
KEXP's New York studio will be at the Museum of Television & Radio, located at 25 W. 52nd St. So plan your lunch hours accordingly so you can catch some of these shows, which are all held late morning and mid day.
We'll have a full list of April and May shows coming up soon, there are A LOT to cover. We find it somehow comforting that we're already buying tickets for shows in the springtime ... we're ready to thaw! Moving on, so as not to repeat ourselves here is last month's sell outs list which has tickets that are still on sale for upcoming shows. And as for the below list we have starred the shows that have a high risk factor of Hilary Duff being in attendance, consider this a public service.
In case somebody is reading Gothmamist at the hour on a Friday...
This is where Gothamist tells you what tickets to buy...before they sell out and you are left bargaining on Craigslist.
Much to do this weekend. Much to do.
This is where Gothamist tells you about all of the shows you should buy tickets for NOW because they will in fact sell out, and you will in fact be scanning Craigslist in hopes of finding a ticket for double the face value at the last minute. So pay attention and purchase wisely. This months list was particularly hard to compose because of the ratio of really good shows to the amount of money we have in our pocket.
Gothamist is aware that you're probably already finding yourself pulled towards the sweet Sirens sounds promised to be coming from Coney Island tomorrow, but we wanted to give you a reminder of the event in the form a preview. We are really excited about it ourselves and are having a problem figuring out which acts to catch, so here's our rundown for your sake and our own...
Singing You To Shipwreck"
For New Yorkers, this week's concert calendar should be focused on Saturday's Siren Music Festival down at Coney Island. (Hopefully the weather will hang in there. As of today the forecast is for isolated thunderstorms, which I suppose is better than intense heat and humidity.) This year's line-up is a dream come true for the fan of indie rock. Death Cab For Cutie, Blonde Redhead, TV on the Radio, the Fiery Furnaces, Har Mar Superstar, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Electric Six, Mission of Burma and lots more. Get there early--the Fiery Furnaces hit the stage at 2pm.
