Bearing a window display of brightly colored hard hats and Rosie the Riveter posters, a new-ish Prospect Heights store sells gear for female construction workers and the ladies of the MTA, FDNY and NYPD. "I couldn't walk into a regular store and get anything that was comfortable or fit. Dealing with oversized gear is dangerous, so I had a vision," said Deidre Douglas, who opened the store a year ago. Now, in the small but growing world of female laborers Woman Up! is making a name for itself as the place to get the goods to do the job.

U.S. Voters are Chubby Chasers, Who Knew?
We knew Jon Corzine was being immature and plain-old mean when he attacked opponent Chris Christie’s weight last year, but new research shows the jab was bad politics too. According to another “no fair” new study voters prefer their male politicians tubby, though they like their female ones slender. Results showed voters think heavy men are more reliable and sometimes more inspiring than their skinny counterparts.
More Gingkos, More Problems
As one man battles a ginkgo biloba tree in Brooklyn, another fights his own stinky tree situation in Queens. Barry Plonski's home on 210th Street and 43rd Avenue in Bayside is within smelling distance of multiple gingkos — and he places the smell they emit "at the olfactory intersection of animal feces and vomit." Female gingkos, the smelly fruit bearers, are the ones to blame — and there are about 15 in Plonski's neighborhood.
Bronx Cop Hits Pregnant Woman's Car, Drives Away
Bronx resident Sanija Kurtovic is eight months pregnant, and she got quite a scare the other day when her parked car was sideswiped as she was about to get out. But what's even scarier is that the vehicle that hit her was an NYPD cruiser, and the driver allegedly fled the scene. Kurtovic says that after her car was hit, she ran up to Officer Shirley Perez-Romero, who was stopped at a red light. But the cop allegedly played dumb, acting as if she didn't realize an accident had occured. Kurtovic says the officer told her she would do a U-turn and file a report, but instead Officer Perez-Romero just drove off.
35K Settlement in Caliente Cab Restroom Gender Lawsuit
Anyone who’s ever declared, “You couldn’t pay me to eat at Caliente Cab Company” should consider the case of Khadijah Farmer, whose humiliating experience at the West Village tourist trap netted her $35,000 today. While patronizing the restaurant after the Gay Pride parade last year, Farmer was ousted from the ladies room by the bouncer, who interrupted her while she was on the toilet because he thought she was a he.
When One Female Cabbie is Mugged, Others Race to Aid
Three female cab drivers were on a group cell phone call with a fourth female cab driver when they heard her being choked by a mugger on 28th St. and Ninth Ave. So they called 911 and raced to the scene, coming to their friend's aid and simultaneously forming what was probably the largest number of female cab drivers ever assembled in one place; over 99% of New York City cab drivers are men.
