On Thursday night, a Brooklyn father was fatally shot by police while investigating a possible break-in at his home. Duane Browne, 26, was killed during a confrontation wrought with confusion after police responded to a 911 call from a woman who said two armed men had forced her boyfriend into their apartment demanding money. Browne came down to investigate, allegedly carrying a gun. “He was in his house. He was trying to protect his family from what he thought was intruders. How that got misconstrued and what happened, it’s unfortunate,” Shawnte Brown told CBS.

Father Throws Children Out Window...For A Good Reason
There aren't too many scenarios where a man throwing children out of a building has a happy ending. But that was just the twist yesterday when a fire broke out in a Kensington family's apartment, forcing one father to quickly get the children out of the house through a third story window. Mohammad Qasim, one of 13 family members who has lived in the house for the past ten years, found himself trapped in the attic with three kids who hadn't escaped as smoke filled the air; the children were too scared to jump, so he tossed them out a narrow window to a pitched roof ten feet below. There were only minor injuries, everyone survived, and there won't be any Law & Order episodes ripped from this headline.
Cancer Patient Meets Long Lost Daughter—His Nurse!
A terminal cancer patient has been reunited with his daughter after 41 years when he was placed in her unit at Calvary Hospital. Wanda Rodriguez said she saw Victor Peraza had been transferred to her hospital, and "got nervous, very anxious, and I said, 'Oh my God that's my father's name...what chance is there it's my dad?'" It turns out it was. Victor Peraza said, "It was fate and hope and a miracle. It was like God answered my prayers."
Burned Child Released From the Hospital
Nine-year-old Christopher Moss was released from the hospital after his father held his hands over an oven burner for two minutes as punishment for stealing money from his wallet. Father James Moss was charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, but posted his $15,000 and is due in court on Tuesday. When asked by authorities why he punished his child by burning him and putting him in an oven, Moss allegedly claimed the punishment fit the crime. Christopher was treated for 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his hands.

James Moss, 52, was charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
Lowery's Stepdad's Outburst May Land Him Jail Time
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree! Convicted killer Natavia Lowery's stepdad left a Manhattan courtroom in handcuffs yesterday after disrupting her sentencing, which has now been delayed to April 26th. Earlier this year Lowery was found guilty of killing her former boss Linda Stein. According to the Daily News, yesterday her stepfather screamed in court, "She has the right to change counsel under the sixth amendment." The outburst was brought on after the judge insulted the lawyer the Lowery's hoped to bring on board for the sentencing, noting he hadn't even read the case file. Due to other complications, however, Lowery's sentencing would have been delayed anyway. And now her stepdad faces up to a year in jail after being charged with contempt.
Hardworking Dad Stabbed to Death by Teen Thugs
In the Bronx a heroic dad of two young girls was stabbed to death by a group of vicious teens Friday night, while attempting to protect the 16-year-old son of a friend. The teen had been involved in an altercation between two rival groups earlier in the day, and after night fell prowlers came back looking for him. “I’ll hang with you,” 26-year-old Orlando Salgado told the teen, according to the AP, but the thugs stabbed him twice and ran. "For saving his life, we're going to take yours now," one of the attackers allegedly told him.
Gay Bash Suspect's Father Takes Blame, Friend Defends Him
Initial reports about the brutal beating of an openly gay Queens man Friday night (video) mentioned that one of the alleged assailants told the victim, "My father is a C.O. [correction officer]. You will never do anything to us." That stupid boast had been unsubstantiated, until now. Last night the father of Daniel Rodriguez, the second man arrested in the alleged hate crime against Jack Price, came forward to speak to reporters.
Bobbit's Legacy Lives Online
When plotting to cut off some dude's Johnson, research is everything. On trial yesterday on charges of killing her father and cutting off his penis, airport security guard Brigitte Harris, 28, told jurors she thoroughly searched the Internet for rod-cutting inspiration, finding Lorena Bobbitt's infamous attack on her husband particularly helpful. But before anyone calls for banning the Internet to save the penises, note that Harris's father allegedly molested her since the age of 3 (and her younger sister).
Queens Dad Allowed To Kick Son Out Of Co-Op
A Queens judge ruled that a 45-year-old man can be evicted from the Woodside, Queens co-op his dad has let him live in for 18 years. According to the Daily News, even though Richard Carnivale was allowed to live in the apartment and paid $250,000 in maintenance fees over the two decades—his dad welcomed him to the new pad with a kiss and said, "Here are the keys to your new home"—he never had actual ownership. The judge wrote, "The son's claim of ownership is essentially predicated on the handing over of keys to the co-op apartment. No writing exists to evidence an intention by the father of making the son the owner of the property." Plus, the father and son had a falling out, and Carnivale stopped paying maintenance in 2007. A lawyer for Carnivale's father said his client has health problems, "The father didn't want to do this, but he needs the money. It's a shame that it had to come to this. We're not looking to take the apartment and throw him out in the street." Carnivale may appeal the ruling.
Driver In Insane Bronx Rampage Set New Low For Recklessness
The enraged driver whose appalling mile-long rampage through the Bronx Sunday left one father dead could be arraigned as early as today on multiple charges, including manslaughter, reckless endangerment, assault and child endangerment. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne tells the Times, "I know of no incident in which a motorist crashed into so many cars over so long a distance on city streets. It’s rare by any measure."
Park Slope Dads Finally Helping Watch Kids
Hey, pretend it's the '50s and you're reading this article in a newspaper titled "Who’s That With Baby at the Y? Why, It’s Daddy." Wait, shouldn't daddy be at the office with his briefcase while mommy is with the baby at the Y, or preferably in the kitchen making dinner and starching shirts?
Father of Council Speaker Christine Quinn Gets His Close-Up
The most indispensable member of Council Speaker Christine Quinn's staff seems to be an unpaid 81-year-old World War II veteran, her father Lawrence P. Quinn. An endearing profile in the Times today spotlights his ongoing efforts for his daughter, who will run for mayor next year. Ms. Quinn, an openly gay liberal, calls him "an all-purpose schlepper" who comes in handy for retirement home photo-ops. Mr. Quinn, a practicing Catholic, seems to be crying for help: “It’s not volunteerism; I am forced to do it." But he lives alone and all his pals are dead, so maybe he's okay with being his daughter's "trophy wife." Although he's been known to tell voters, "I don’t agree with her, either. But listen, if she loses, she’s unemployed and I’m going to have to pay her rent"

Jose Fernandez supported the mother of his now-brain dead son as she was arraigned for attempted murder, assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Fernandez said that whatever happened to their son 7-week-old Pablo must have been an accident.
