Yesterday afternoon at around 4:20 p.m., a police cruiser traveling south on Broadway (between 135th and 136th Streets) struck a 79-year-old man who was crossing the street from a median. The man, Javier Jackson, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead two hours later.

A 16-year-old with a learner's permit "struck and killed a 65-year-old pedestrian in Brooklyn" last night, 1010WINS reports. Stanislaw Zak had been waiting for a bus near Bay Ridge Parkway and 18th Avenue at 9:20 p.m. The teen, whose Mazda had struck another car before hitting Zak, will be "ticketed for driving with a learner's permit without a licensed driver"—it's unclear whether the teen will be charged with anything more.
Yesterday afternoon, two coworkers at an architecture firm were walking on East 37th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues when a Gristede's delivery van, driven by an apparently drunk man, jumped the curb and slammed into them on the sidewalk. A 29-year-old mother of three, who was also three months pregnant, was killed while a 37-year-old woman was seriously injured.
A reader sent us this image of an ambulance, the fire department and police at East 37th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues. Apparently a truck jumped a sidewalk, hit two pedestrians and hit a building. According to initial reports, one person was killed. More details as they come, but, unfortunately, there was another incident of a car hitting a building uptown: A cab crashed into a pizzeria on Amsterdam between 106th and 107th, injuring several people, one critically. Update In the Midtown incident, the driver was and the woman who was killed was 29 years old and pregnant.
Around 10:40 a.m., a man was struck by a white Honda that apparently jumped a curb at Capodanno Boulevard and Seaview Avenue on Staten Island. The Staten Island Advance reported the man, who had been waiting, was pronounced dead at the Staten Island University Hospital 25 minutes later, and described the incident: "The 19-year-old driver's car apparently jumped the curb after making a turn onto Capodanno from Seaview, pinning the man between the vehicle and a pole that lists the bus schedule." The driver stayed at the scene and was questioned by police—but was not taken into custody.
