Two Children Dead in Queens Van Crash

Two girls have died from a horrible van crash in St. Albans, Queens that occurred at 5 p.m. yesterday. Both were foster children: The first, a 15-year-old, died late Monday night, and the other, a 5-year-old died at 4:30 this morning. The Daily News reports that driver Shelia Bethea, 45, "crossed the double-yellow line on Dunkirk St. in Saint Albans while going between 60 and 70 miles an hour, slamming her minivan into another van."

Orthodox Boy Fatally Struck by Driver with Suspended License

A nine-year-old boy on his way to the temple in Williamsburg yesterday was struck and killed by a driver who was operating her vehicle on a suspended license. The accident took place as 54-year-old Novella Bilkerdyk made a left turn onto Wallabout Avenue off Bedford, striking 9-year-old Joshua Ganzfried with her Honda Accord and dragging him under it for a few feet. Police in Brooklyn charged Bilkerdyk with driving with a suspended license after having it taken away from her in 2007 for multiple insurance lapses. The Post talked to a witness who did not want to be named but told them, "The driver got out and started screaming hysterically," as he says Bilkerdyk screamed, "A Jewish boy! A Jewish boy!" Ganzfried was one of seven children from an Orthodox family, dressed in traditional garb as he headed to Saturday services. Neighbors tell the News that the corner the incident took place is notoriously a dangerous spot.

2008_11_LIsuv.jpgPolice are looking for the driver of an SUV who left the scene of an accident that killed a 29-year-old woman and injured her 6-year-old son late Friday afternoon in Inwood. Victoria Cuadros was walking her son Nicholas home from school just before 5 p.m. when they were struck by the vehicle turning at what neighbors say is a notoriously bad intersection. Those on the scene say Cuadros was able to speak after she was hit and they believed she would pull through, but she passed away after being helicoptered to Nassau University Medical Center. Her son, who only suffered minor leg pain from the crash, has not yet been told of his mother's death. At Max's Pizza where his father works, a sign was up in the window yesterday that read "Closed for Mourning." Police, along with friends and family of the victim, are pleading for the driver to turn themselves in.

Eight-year-old Alexander Toulouse was struck and killed by a mail truck Saturday afternoon in Downtown Brooklyn. Alexander, known as the "little professor," was biking near his Cobble Hill home with his father, Fordham University political science professor Christopher Toulouse, when a postal truck turning on Livingston Street and Boerum Place hit the boy without ever having seen him. A witness said that the driver "wasn't going real fast" and was not charged after staying on the scene following the accident. Witnesses said he appeared devastated. The NY Daily News says that Alexander had just begun third grade at P.S. 29, was a big fan of Dancing With the Stars and a fervent supporter of Barack Obama.

Rafael Sanz experienced what had to be the most intensely emotional day in his life yesterday after his pregnant wife was struck and killed by a van. Dr. Lynn Kempt at St. Barnabas Hospital told the Daily News, "You know that song, 'New York Minute?' I had to tell this poor man that his wife was dead, and then I walked him down to show him his son." The family of Donnette Sanz was about to hold a shower for her will now prepare a funeral instead.

An awful tragedy unfolded in the Bronx yesterday afternoon: A 33-year-old traffic agent was crossing 188th Street at Webster Avenue when a "runaway van" hit her. Donnette Sanz was propelled into the path of a school bus, and she was pinned underneath. A witness told NY1, "The van had hit the lady first, she flipped over. And the bus had got in the way, and hit her and ran her over."
