Gentlemen, put down your razors! (Which you should have been doing for Movember, anyway.) This weekend marks the second annual NYC Beard Competition, sponsored by the Gotham City Beard Alliance. And the competition is looking fierce!
An Epic Facial Hair Face-Off Grows In Greenpoint
Vote Now: Who Had The Best Civil War Facial Hair?
History: making mustaches cool for 150 years! As part of their "The Civil War: 150 Years" anniversary programming, the Smithsonian magazine website is asking readers to vote for their favorite display of Civil War facial hair. "Among the many officers who fought in the U.S. Civil War," they ask, "Who wore their beard, mustache, mutton chops or sideburns the best?"
Hirsute Men Find Acceptance In City's Workplaces
Possibly in honor of the cold weather today, the Post takes a look at how men with furry faces have become more accepted in the workplace. However, despite the newfound prevalence of beards, there are still no laws protecting those with facial hair that's not related to religion or disability! Didn't anyone tell them about Movember?
It's a Beard-Off!
Last night the 2009 NYC Beard & Moustache Championships went down at Public Assembly in Williamsburg. The hairy set, and those who love them, were out in full force sporting everything from magnificent muttonchops to classic '70s porn 'staches. While competitions like this have been going on for years, certain facial hair looks are even more in fashion now with the popularity of recession chic on the rise. The winner of one prize even began growing his beard after being laid off five months ago as a financial broker, according to the Daily News. Wonder how many of the 80 contestants shaved this morning?
NYPD Requires Clean Shaves
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has ordered a revision to the NYPD's appearance guidelines and facial hair on cops is for the most part forbidden. No full beards, no goatees, no chinstrap beards, and no highly sculpted facial hair patterns. Mustaches, of course, are still acceptable. Undercover cops are allowed to retain whatever facial hair they choose. Uniformed officers found to be insufficiently clean shaven could face a formal infraction report or the loss of a vacation day.
