Greenwich Village Street Named After Slain Auxiliary Cops

Yesterday, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, and other officials gathered for the second anniversary of the deaths of two auxiliary police officers who were killed by a murderous gunman. The anniversary also marked the naming of the corner at Bleecker and Sullivan Streets in the West Village after the two officers, Eugene Marshalik and Nicholas Pekearo. Kelly said, "From this day forward, millions of New Yorkers will be reminded of Nicholas and Eugene and what they stood for."

After outcry over the Justice Department's denial of benefits for the families of two auxiliary cops killed last year, U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey will reportedly review the decision. Senator Chuck Schumer, who co-wrote legislation to give benefits to families of first-responders who die in the line of duty, said Mukasey "seemed sympathetic. He said he would review it personally. He's a legal eagle, and the fact that the law is on our side should matter."

Last night, police officer Rory Mangra (pictured) attempted to approach a man smoking pot in Prospect Heights, but the man ended up shooting him in the leg. Mangra and his partner, Eric Merizelde, both uniformed but driving in an unmarked car, saw Kingsley Newland light up outside a beauty parlor at Flatbush Avenue and Dean Street in Brooklyn. From the Daily News:

Mangra stepped out of the car to approach Newland, but the suspect fled, police said. Merizelde sped ahead in the car, hopped a sidewalk and tried to block the suspect's path.

Police officers from both the regular and auxiliary force attended a second funeral in two days for a slain auxiliary police officer killed during a Greenwich Village rampage. Nineteen-year-old Eugene Marshalik was remembered at a funeral in Brooklyn by friends, family members, fellow cops, and city officials.

Yesterday, regular and auxiliary police officers were present to pay their respects during the Manhattan funeral of auxiliary police officer Nicholas Pekearo, who was killed during a Greenwich Village rampage. Pekearo, a 28-year-old who had worked at an Upper East Side bookstore, recently written a novel and thought about joining the NYPD one day, was remembered fondly by friends and colleagues (it turned out Pekearo had shaved his head to support a fellow auxiliary officer who was going through chemotherapy). Mayor Bloomberg said during the eulogy:

He was our native son. New York was in his soul. It was in his quick, kinetic style of speech and in a sense of humor that was at the same time humble and ironic, sarcastic and self-deprecating... He grew from a little boy to a man in the same apartment on Morton Street. He learned his ABCs at PS 3 on Grove Street and graduated from Bayard Rustin High School, on West 18th Street.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told mourners, "He came face to face with evil and conquered it. And today, his sacrifice redeems us all."

The papers take a look at the life of David R. Garvin, the man who shot and killed a restaurant employee and then two auxiliary police officers in a shocking Greenwich Village incident Wednesday night.

The NYPD has revealed more details about last night's horrible shooting the Greenwich Village. The police released a photograph of the gunman, David Garvin (pictured below), who apparently was a regular DeMarco's customer and was asked to leave a few times. Garvin fatally shot DeMarco's employee Alfredo Romero Morales, then shot two auxiliary police officers before being killed by other responding police officers. His roommate worked for DeMarco's, but had been fired a few months ago; a resident said that Garvin was an ex-employee, but that has not been confirmed.

Last night, a man carrying two handguns and over 100 rounds of ammunition shot and killed a pizzeria employee in Greenwich Village and fatally shot two unarmed auxiliary police officers, before responding police officers shot him on Bleecker Street. The slain counterman at DeMarco's Pizza is being described as Romero Morales or Alfredo Romaro (we will refer to him as Romaro). The auxiliary police officers were identified as 19-year-old Eugene Marshalik, a NYU student, and Nicholas Pekearo, 28. And the shooter was David Garvin, 50 (also described as being 32 year old). Mayor Bloomberg said, "It's a horrible night for the New York Police Department and the city."
