After $400 Million Oops, Christie Fires Education Commish

Days after an error on NJ's Race to the Top application for hundreds of millions in federal education funds became widely publicized, NJ Governor Chris Christie has fired his education commissioner, former Jersey City mayor Bret Schundler. In fact, Schundler's photograph has already been taken off the NJ Department of Education website (but you can see it via Way Back Machine). Schundler apparently refused to resign, so Christie canned him, because Schundler seemingly lied about what happened during the RTT presentation. more ›

"Do Not Lean" on the Inconsistent Font

After we covered the grammatically-busted Brodaway sign on Brooklyn's G platform yesterday, a number of font-philes questioned the typography in many "Do Not Lean" decals adorning subway doors. NYC Transit's Paul Fleuranges tells us that while "customers see fit to vandalize" signs, this particular error could be blamed on the car builder. He explained:

We did have a recent problem with a car builder who took it upon themselves to manufacture and apply subway car decals without the prior approval of NYC Transit. The cars were delivered to NYC Transit with the wrong decals. They have since been instructed not to do so going forward, and those that were applied in error will be replaced with NYC Transit approved and manufactured decals.

Not too long ago there was a behind the scenes glimpse of the Times Square billboards that light up the "Crossroads of the World" day in and day out. Now it looks like the old fashioned painted ads are more reliable, as AndIAmNotLying points out a glitch from last night in one electronic billboard on 8th and 42nd. Oopsy! It's a snafu that could be costing someone as much as $300K a month, and this isn't the first time it's happened. more ›
