-Yankees 6 Baltimore 3: The game plan has become very familiar: keep working the count to force the starting pitcher to work hard and then once he is out of the game, bomb the bullpen. Erik Bedard shut down New York for six innings, but needed 106 pitches to do so. The Yankees scored all six of their runs after he left with Johnny Damon hitting a big home run and Robinson Cano delivering a clutch RBI-single. The win and the Boston loss puts the Yankees’ lead in the division back to three games.
In a stunner, the United States actually lost a game in pool play during the World Baseball Classic. Yesterday, they lost to their friendly neighbors to the north, 8-6. If you're thinking to yourselves, "Canada? Who the hell do they have?" Gothamist can say that we're right there with you. The "big" names on Team Canada include: Erik Bedard, Paul Quantrill, Chris Reitsma, Corey Koskie, Jason Bay, and Matt Stairs. Canada all but conceded the game when they shuffled their starting rotation, so the win is even bigger a shock. But with the WBC essentially an extremely competitive Spring Training, anything can happen.
Over in Arizona yesterday, the United States won their first game in the World Baseball Classic, defeating Mexico 2-0. Jake Peavey, the starter for the United States, pitched only three innings, allowing 1 hit on only 23 pitches. He was pulled despite pitch counts allowing as many as 65 in the first round. Mike Timlin picked up the victory for the Americans, who struggled mightly against Rodrigo Lopez and four other Mexican pitchers.
It was a good and busy weekend at the Stadium for the Yankees. the Yankees managed to take three out of four games from Baltimore and increase their lead over the Red Sox to 9.5 games. The big trade that everyone wanted to see (Randy Johnson coming to the big Apple) did not happen, but Cashman was able to unload the inconsistent Jose Contreras for the steady Esteban Loaiza.
Erik Bedard and the Baltimore bullpen, led by newly acquired and former Yankee Jason Grimsley, held the Bronx Bombers to two runs and seven hits. Miguel Tejada led the way for the Orioles going 3-5 with four RBI.
7 games vs. the Orioles, 70 runs and 7 wins. Yankee management has got to be thinking, "can we schedule some more games with these guys?" Last night the Yankees jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on an Alex Rodriguez home run in the 1st inning. Mike Mussina, making his first start since he injured his groin 10 days ago, got off to a rocky start, but managed to pick up the win. Mussina gave up a three run home run to Miguel Tejada in the first inning, but settled down after that. The Yankees never looked back. A-Rod added another home run in the 7th inning and Derek Jeter had a homer in the 2nd, as the Yanks posted yet another win over their American League East rivals. Tonight Jon Lieber tries to get his 6th win of the year, as the Orioles counter with Erik Bedard.
