Last night's first Critical Mass ride in an era of the police parade rule that requires groups of 50 or more to apply for permits resulted in three people getting arrested, forty-four receiving tickets, and a few people getting summonses. Based on the NY Times and Newsday articles, the arrests were for disorderly conduct, obstructing government administration, and something to be determined. Newsday had this interesting account of one bicyclist's experience after the ride started:

Moments later, police stopped Kim Kalesti, 49, on Park Avenue South near 18th Street, confiscated her single-speed bike and put her in the back of a squad car.

-Phillies 4, Mets 3: Philadelphia's Ryan Howard helped snap the Mets' 11-game winning streak at home and seven-game winning streak. Mets starter Brian Bannister had a rough start, but he settled down after allowing all four Philadelphia runs. With the Phillies playing for the wild card, the Mets can laugh these losses off, but Bannister knows he won't find himself on a postseason roster without catching manager Willie Randolph's eye.

- Mets 4, Phillies 3: Since June 23rd, Tom Glavine was stuck on career win number 286, but thanks to Philly starter Jon Lieber, he was finally able to move one win closer to #300. Glavine and the Mets trailed the Phillies by two runs after one inning but took the lead in the 6th inning when Lieber threw away what should have been the third out of the inning. Prior to the error, Lieber retired 17 straight batters. Aaron Heilman pitched a perfect 8th inning and Billy Wagner picked up his 24th save.

There was a fire this afternoon on Lafayette Street, and Eric Brown took some photographs that are on Flickr. And what we found interesting is that the fire seems to be on the roof - most fires we see seem to come from the inside of the building. We hope no one was hurt. [Related: There was another brush fire in Staten Island's Great Kills area last night...arson or just brush fire season?]
