Chelsea Clinton Engaged

Former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton announced her engagement to Marc Mezvinsky, a Goldman Sachs banker and classmate from Stanford, via e-mail: "We're sorry for the mass e-mail but we wanted to wish everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving! We also wanted to share that we are engaged! We didn't get married this past summer despite the stories to the contrary, but we are looking toward next summer and hope you all will be there to celebrate with us. Happy Holidays! Chelsea & Marc" ABC News also notes Mezvinsky's "father, former Iowa congressman Edward Mezvinsky, was released from federal prison last April after serving a sentence for his role in a Nigerian fraud scheme." Clinton, 29, works at a hedge fund.

Hiram's Slashed Girlfriend: "We Love Each Other"

State Senator Hiram Monserrate's girlfriend spoke to the Daily News about her love for Monserrate: "I love him. We love each other and we want to be together again." See, Karla Giraldo hasn't been able to see Monserrate ever since a judge placed an order of protection preventing him from contacting her—since he slashed her last December with a broken glass—"I never asked for an order of protection. Now that the case is over, what is the reason for keeping us separated? I feel that the justice system has been unjust to me."

Hiram Wants To Put A Ring On Slashed Girlfriend's Finger

Sure, State Senator Hiram Monserrate wants to marry his girlfriend Karla Giraldo (at least according to his lawyer)—but there is a snag: That pesky order of protection that prevents Monserrate from contacting Giraldo, since he slashed her face with a broken glass last December! Monserrate and Giraldo both said it was an accident—and Monserrate was acquitted of two felony charges related to the incident but found guilty of a misdemeanor—but the judge still needs to remove the order.

Weiner to Tie the Knot

The 2009 campaign season may have left us with the distinct impression that Congressman Anthony Weiner is a bit of a tease, but apparently Weiner was just playing Gotham's Democratic voters while he was actually doing groundwork on the sole endorsement he was aiming for—from girlfriend Huma Abedin. Weiner and Abedin, the Hillary Clinton aide whom the News calls "glamorous" and "a linchpin of Clinton's entourage," just went public, but it turns out the proposal happened right around the time Weiner backed out of the mayoral race with an allusion to wanting to "start a family." The pair got outed in a NYT piece on former Clinton strategist and current Bloomberg campaign mastermind Howard Wolfson who dropped the "f" bomb (the other one) when referring to the two. The possible future Huma Weiner has apparently been courted by John Cusack and George Clooney in the past, which we believe beats his links to foreign models. She also happens to be Muslim, to which Gawker says "maybe he will be less of an asshole now." How sweet!

Craigslist Killer No Longer Championed by Fiancee, Family

Accused Craigslist killer Philip Markoff allegedly told family members to "forget about him" soon after his arrest last April for the murder of Julissa Brisman. And while they haven't quite abandoned him yet, his loved ones are not quite the cheerleaders they once were when he was first arrested. Yesterday a lawyer for Markoff's fiancee Megan McAllister, who initially was sticking with plans for their August wedding, revealed that she met with Markoff last month and told him that she is moving on, adding "it would be quite a long period of time, if ever, before she saw him again." The lawyer also refused to say if McAllister still believed Markoff was innocent, but that she found emerging details "disturbing" with now cops saying they found four women's panties stuffed in a sock and hidden between this mattress and spring box. A similar reticent tune came from Markoff's lawyer when asked if his family still believed that he was not guilty. He replied, "They're sticking by him."

Craigslist Killer Suspect Dumped By Fiancee

Megan McAllister, the NJ woman engaged to suspected Craigslist killer Philip Markoff, is moving on with her life. She was spotted visiting him at his jail yesterday—without her engagement ring—and her lawyer said the two had a "candid, frank" talk and that "it's time to move on with other things in her life." McAllister, who met Markoff while they were students at SUNY Albany, had previously made public statements standing by Markoff and continued to, sort of: Her lawyer said this morning, "I think she feels that she’s supportive of him. The man that she knew and loved for four years is not the man that’s being portrayed in the media." Like how her fiancee allegedly looked for gays and transgender people, too?

Engagement to Nowhere: Bristol Palin, Levi Johnston Break Up

Famous Alaskan teen parents Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston have confirmed their break-up to the Associated Press. The couple's relationship and pregnancy became an unavoidable talking point since Palin's mother, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, was the 2008 Republican VP candidate; the couple made a very public appearance at the Republican National Convention and their baby Tripp was born on Dec. 27. Today, Johnston said that they decided to mutually break up "a while ago" but his sister Mercede told Star there were bigger problems, "Levi tries to visit Tripp every single day, but Bristol makes it nearly impossible. She tells him he can't take the baby to our house because she doesn't want him around 'white trash'!" Bristol Palin, who just last month said they were getting married, is "devastated" about the Star article and said, "Unfortunately, my family has seen many people say and do many things to 'cash in' on the Palin name. Sometimes that greed clouds good judgment and the truth."

Books, or at least book shelves, must be on this couple's wedding registry: The Post has a cute story about a couple whose engagement took place at the Strand Bookstore. Joshua Reich and Shianling King "always told friends they met at the Strand," but they actually met online - their first date was supposed to be at the Museum of Modern Art, but the lines were so long that they went to the Strand instead....
