Iconic Chelsea eatery Empire Diner lost its lease earlier this year, and was forced to shut its doors in May. The owners of the diner, which had been featured in movies such as Woody Allen's Manhattan, plan on reopening elsewhere in the city, but are now engaged in an ongoing legal battle with their old landlord over the name.

Williamsburg Diner Relish Leaves Dear John Letter on Door
We're still trying to determine exactly why the classic chrome railcar-style diner Relish abruptly closed earlier this week, but this long goodbye was taped up inside the glass doors the other night. Written by owner Sandy Stillman, the missive is more of a love-letter to Williamsburg than farewell card, and explains the closure in vague terms, simply that announcing that it's time for Relish to "take another step so it can wake up rested stronger and cuter than ever."
Chelsea's Empire Diner Set To Close Next Month
Another iconic NYC diner is closing: The Empire Diner in Chelsea says in a note posted on its website, "After more than thirty years of serving Chelsea residents, actors, police commissioners, athletes, gangsters, such luminaries as Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Steven Spielberg, and anyone carrying a New York City Guide Book, the Empire Diner has lost its lease and is closing its doors May 15th, 2010. Renate Gonzalez and Mitchell Woo are facing the bittersweet task of closing this iconic New York institution on 22nd and 10th while actively looking for sites to open a new Empire Diner."
Empire Diner Will End With Coffee Shop Invasion
The iconic Empire Diner in Chelsea is being taken over by the team that operates the obnoxiously fashionable but beautifully staffed Coffee Shop in Union Square. The owner of the property will not be renewing the lease with Renata Gonzalez, who's operated the classic diner for over three decades. Instead, the Gotham City Restaurant Group will replace Gonzalez with a 15-year lease rumored to be in the $25,000 per month range. Gonzalez says she's trying to get the new owner to keep some of the current employees, some of whom have been there for as long as her, but that seems unlikely. The name's changing too, but that hasn't been revealed yet.

Loves the atmosphere; says “the food at Allen & Delancey is at once sophisticated and accessible, reliant on fail-safe luxuries deployed in a modestly creative and occasionally playful manner.” Says that in some ways it’s similar to what he did uptown (at Gordon Ramsay at the London) but it works much better in this context. In $25 and Under, "> Peter Meehan goes to Food...
