Non-Emergency Emergency Landing Pilot Investigated

The 24-year-old pilot who made an emergency landing at Rockaway Beach—in spite of not getting permission for the landing—and explained that he did so because it "happens in Alaska all the time"—is not City Councilman Peter Vallone's favorite person. The Queens lawmaker wrote to the FAA, "Mr. Maloney must face the strictest punishment. A pilot who abuses the privilege of flying, at a minimum, should have his licenses revoked." The Queens DA's office is also launching a criminal probe into Maloney's antics. more ›

Pilot Landed On Queens Beach Because "It Happens All The Time In Alaska"

The Monday night emergency plane landing on Rockaway Beach may be in part thanks to a young pilot's fondness for a Discovery show about flying planes in Alaska—as well as a passenger's upset stomach. Jason Maloney, 24, also spoke in a joking, casual manner with air traffic control when asking for permission (which was repeatedly denied, because it wasn't declared emergency) to land on the beach, saying, "Just let us know if we're up in your grill," and ""Whooooa ... What if I want to hide from you?" [Listen to the weird audio below.] more ›

JFK Plane Scare Drives Passengers To Drink

JFK Plane Scare Drives Passengers To Drink

Though all 193 passengers and 11 crew members on yesterday's Moscow-bound Delta flight 30 were unharmed after the plane was forced to dump fuel and land back at JFK because of a blown engine, most of them were pretty spooked about the incident. Irine Dokuchaeva of Moscow told the Post, "We felt [a bump], and the airplane stopped going up. It was flying straight. The captain said, ‘There is a problem, and we need to dump fuel. Don’t worry if you see fuel in the window'...Everybody stayed calm, but everybody wanted to drink something." Which would be the only way to stay calm if you saw your plane's fuel through the window. more ›

Bombardier Jet Made Emergency Landing In Milwaukee

Bombardier Jet Made Emergency Landing In Milwaukee

A CRJ-200 jet manufactured by Bombardier of Montreal, the same makers of the CRJ-900 jet that was forced to land at JFK on Saturday night, was forced to make an emergency landing in Milwaukee yesterday when only two of its three sets of landing gear would lower. The landing was the sixth time in two years that planes from that company have been forced to land due to faulty landing gear. The CRJ-series jets were designed as commuter planes for short trips, often having to take off and land multiple times a day. more ›

Lots of Jet Fuel Dumped Over Jersey for Emergency Landing

Residents in the vicinity of Newark International Airport were complaining about the smell of gas Sunday afternoon after a Boeing 777 dumped 170,000 pounds of jet fuel into the air while preparing for an emergency landing. The plane, carrying 269 passengers bound for Tokyo, returned to the airport less than an hour after takeoff yesterday because of a "hydraulic problem." But before it could touch down, it needed to lighten up by emptying its fuel tanks over the Garden State. more ›

Six passengers restrained him after he tried to open a side exit door, and then started banging on the cockpit door. This Just In: Plane Crash Lands In SI Landfill

This Just In: Plane Crash Lands In SI Landfill

January 15th is either the best or the worst day to fly. Last year on this day, the United Airways Flight 1549 flight landed in the Hudson River (no serious injuries thanks to the smooth flying of Sully!)... and we just got word that an aircraft has crash landed in a Staten Island Landfill. Word is that the "Piper Cub" landed safely, and the pilot is now outside of the aircraft and walking it off. According to reports coming over the newswire, the emergency landing was due to a mechanical failure, and the police are stating there is "debris or the banner the plane was towing down on the N/B Shore Expwy." more ›

More Issues at Newark: Emergency Landing of United Flight

There are early reports of an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport shortly after 9 this morning. WABC reported that United Airlines flight 634, arriving at Newark from Chicago, had issues with its landing gear and was forced to make an emergency landing. Another aircraft with bad landing- mechanical issues. Emergency vehicles. Zero idea just how bad." Jim Hoffer of WABC says it was a right wing landing gear issue and that an air traffic controller says there were no injuries, but the emergency exit chutes were deployed. The plane, an Airbus A319 apparently arrived just 15 minutes late, if not at the actual gate. At this time, it's unclear why the landing gear failed. more ›

Pilot Dies During Flight To Newark, Passengers Unaware

According to WCBS 2, "A Continental Airlines flight from Brussels will be making an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport after the plane's captain died mid-flight Thursday morning." The plane, a Boeing 777, will land around noon. CityRoom reports, "Two first officers were operating the plane, 'which they are perfectly qualified to do,' said Arlene Salac, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration at John F. Kennedy International Airport." The plane was scheduled to land at Newark, but now will receive "priority" landing. Update: The plane landed safely and passengers said they were not told. One, whose husband called her when the plane landed and informed her, said the crew "did an incredible job"—even handing out snacks—"I would have done the exact same thing." However, another passenger told CityRoom the staff was "very irritated and unpleasant," though now the passenger understands why. It's believed the 60-year-old pilot had a heart attack; a cardiologist onboard had tried to revive him with a defibrillator. more ›

Lady Who Falsely Claimed There Was Bomb on Plane Pays Up

Lady Who Falsely Claimed There Was Bomb on Plane Pays Up

Remember the lady who tried to argue her way onto a plane last April by bringing up her already checked bags: "What if I had a bomb in my bag? Well, I have a bomb in my bag, so are you guys going to turn the plane around cuz I need my bag" Well, Rosalinda Baez ended up paying JetBlue $23,000 for the plane's emergency landing (they had to be safe, of course). And though the fake bomb charges were dropped, business consultant Baez pleaded guilty to pot possession--there was a "very small quantity of marijuana residue" on her. The Post adds that she "glared at the prosecutor and rolled her eyes repeatedly during yesterday's plea" and could face up to 6 months at sentencing. more ›
