Sailor's Delight All Week

It was nice to end a dull gray weekend with a brilliant red sunset last night. This time the red sky at night means the city is in for a week of delight. A high pressure system will be large and in charge for the next several days. The anticyclone will bring clear skies and a high in the breezy mid 50s today. More sun is expected tomorrow through Thursday with temperatures topping out in the mid 60s.

We love fine dining as much as the next gourmand, but there’s something about fancy French restaurants with their retinues of waiters, sommeliers, captains and bread sergeants that we find slightly offputting. Upon arriving at Last Thursday’s tasting of Vérité wines at Bouley we were in a bit of tizzy, not because of our issues surrounding Le/La/Les establishments, but due to our walking in some five minutes before vigneron Pierre Seillan’s speech ended. This gaffe was largely due to our looking for the restaurant on Broadway instead of West Broadway. In retrospect, this may not have been a bad thing, since the hourlong vertical tasting of three wines started at 11:30 a.m. In order to do it justice, Gothamist would had to have sampled 21 wines, or vintages from 1998 to 2004 of each red on offer, all on a relatively empty stomach. Besides as Seillan, the creative force behind the acclaimed Sonoma County winery, graciously pointed out, our lateness allowed the wines to open up a bit more.

Oh, man, Gothamist's head is spinning this afternoon. We just read the New York article about near future weather and climate changes the city is facing. We cringe whenever we see the words "freakish" and "weird" in any story about the weather as their use usually means the author doesn't have a firm grasp of the subject matter. This case is no exception as we found numerous little errors and misinterpretations. Despite these errors the article mostly gets the big picture right: There's a mild El Nino (which usually indicates a mild winter), the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation is in its warm phase (greater hurricane frequency), and longer-term global temperatures are continuing to rise (more intense hurricanes).

Bob Dylan once wrote "you don't need a weatherman to tell which way the wind blows" to which we will add "you don't need Gothamist to tell you that it is getting cold outside." While you don't need Gothamist to tell you it is getting cold, we will.

Yes, welcome back little boy, Christ child... NOAA has announced the return of the warm waters to the Eastern Pacific, though noting that this time, it's not as strong. "Weaker" is the decription that they use actually. The last El Niño, was in 1997-1998 when it seemed that everything and anything weatherwise was being blamed on the friggen thing. Rain? El Niño. Cold? El Niño. Warm? El Niño. Headache? El Niño.

Hot! Partly cloudy, high of 87. Gothamist enjoyed yesterday's evening blast of rain as it dripped through the ceiling of the theater she was in onto her lap--a sort of breaking down of the fifth wall, if you will.

Though Gothamist is a self-professed Anglophile who can often be seen fondling the Hob Nobs at Myers of Keswick, Gothamist admits to having totally missed the boat on Alistair Cooke. It must have been his long-running stint as host of Masterpiece Theater that shadowed his brilliant work for the BBC, the Letter From America.
