The Nassau County DA's office has indicted two men on felony animal cruelty charges for allegedly operating a dog fighting ring. Marlon Bernier, 25, and Ricardo Louis, 22, are charged with rearing pit bulls, "training the dogs to fight, pitting them against one another, and breeding the strongest dogs." CBS reports they then sold the dogs through their website, BlueMagicPitz.com for around $700 apiece. Authorities seized nine dogs in a raid from a home in Elmont, "many with fresh wounds from recent fights," and two of the animals required urgent medical treatment.

NYC Man In LA Arrested For Long Island Murder
A Queens man living in Los Angeles has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder for a 2009 fatal shooting in Elmont. On May 16, 2009, police found Galy Fortune lying outside Cafe Moments with a gunshot wound in his lower back; he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Both Nassau and federal authorities were able to find suspect Sandino Campbell after learning he was arrested in LA on unrelated drug charges. He was brought back to LI this weekend, but his lawyer says he will plead not guilty to the charges. While there are no witnesses, Mitchell Benson of the Nassau DA's office told Newsday (subscription required), "We're confident we have the right guy." Benson said Fortune and Campbell did not know each other, but got into an "altercation" at the nightclub.
Big Brown Will Run Again
Saturday's Belmont Stakes wasn't the swan song for Big Brown. The three-year-old horse will reportedly race again. While they are still searching for an injury to explain the horse's last-place finish in the Belmont, his owners, IEAH, have decided to enter him in the Travers Stakes in Saratoga Springs on August 23rd. The Travers usually attracts the top three-year olds in racing and perhaps it will give us the much-anticipated Big Brown-Casino Drive matchup that was scheduled for last Saturday, but scratched when Casino Drive stepped on a stone.
