New York: #1 in Voter Apathy, With Lowest Turnout in U.S.!

We did it New York, and by "it" we mean "nothing"! Out of all the apathetic states in this slothful union, New York State ranks #1, boasting the lowest voter turnout in the midterm election earlier this month. The United States Election Project at George Mason University says only 32.1 percent of the 13.4 million eligible voters in New York actually bothered to show up at the polls. Utah and Texas tied for second place, with 32.2 percent turnout, but here in New York many of us simply had too much shit to do to that day—what's their excuse? more ›

Is Bad Ballot Design Why Only 600K Voted on Term Limits?

Is Bad Ballot Design Why Only 600K Voted on Term Limits?

Despite Public Advocate Bill de Blasio's best efforts to hip voters to the term limits proposal on the back of the ballot, only about half of the voters who showed up at the polls Tuesday actually weighed in on the issue. "What proposals?" asked one bewildered Twitter user after the fact. "On the back you say? But I wasn't told. Are you sure?" How did I get here? These aren't my socks. You're not my son! more ›

"David Cuomo" Wins Despite Low Turnout; Senate Undecided

"David Cuomo" Wins Despite Low Turnout; Senate Undecided

Half the people who voted in the Presidential election two years ago didn't show up for yesterday's midterm election in NYC. But who can blame them, when the candidates were so boring compared to the glamorous unicorn-taming, rainbow-making President? Perhaps Virginia Moise, a 21-year-old student at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, said it best to the Daily News: "I don’t usually follow politics. I voted for Obama, but I haven’t paid attention lately." When asked to name a gubernatorial candidate, she replied, "David Cuomo or something." more ›

Also, Senator Charles Schumer is expected to win re-election while Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is also projected to be victorious in her first election after being appointed to Hillary Clinton's Senate seat last year. News organizations project the Republicans to take control of the House of Representatives, and the Tea Party has racked up two wins with Rand Paul winning the Kentucky Senate race and Marco Rubio winning the Florida Senate race. more ›

NYC Ballot Complaint: The Print Is Too Damn Small!

NYC Ballot Complaint: The Print Is Too Damn Small!

One of the complaints that Twittering NYC voters have had with today's general election is the size of the font on the actual ballot. One wondered, "NYC Board of Elections discouraging seniors to vote? Cuz the type on that ballot is extra tiny, even if they do supply magnifiers," only for the NYC Board of Elections to Tweet back, "On all BMDs, “Zoom In” makes the font size larger. “Zoom Out” brings the font back to normal size." The voter replied, "@BOENYC Ummm...no, there were no large font feature on the ballot marking device. Also was not given any instructions by workers." more ›

Some Ballots Come Filled Out Already?

Some Ballots Come Filled Out Already?

Ha, among other pitfalls to watch out for when voting today, be sure that the ballot you're given isn't actually filled out already. One tipster tells us, "Just voted at Goddard Riverside @ 88th & Columbus. The first ballot I received already had the ballot initiatives penned in on the back. Check your ballots when voting!" (Unless you're just lazy and appreciate the help.) Who knew voting would be so prone to human error once the machines finally took over?! The wisenheimers at Upright Citizens Brigade seem to have seen it coming: more ›

Bloomberg Got A "Privacy Sleeve" For His Ballot, Did You?

Bloomberg Got A "Privacy Sleeve" For His Ballot, Did You?

Weeeellllll, look who gets a fancy "privacy sleeve" for his precious ballot! One of the top complaints about the new optical scan voting machines is that they're not private enough, and require you to put your unmentionable votes on display for all the world to see. But apparently there are "privacy sleeves" that you can use to cover your ballot as you transport it over to the scanning machine. Did you get one? Because we didn't, and we're wondering if it's only offered to posh people whose delicate votes need an extra dash of discretion. Here's what we're hearing from the lower orders, via Twitter: more ›
