Is Edward Norton Running For State Senate?

A tipster sent us this image from today's El Diario newspaper, and wondered if, "either El Diario is breaking some awesome news, or their graphic designer deserves a little talking-to..." It made our heads turn too, so we searched around a bit, and found out that Courtney Love's ex-boyfriend is indeed not running for State Senate. more ›

Times, Post, News, El Diario Circulation Offices Raided

According to the AP, police officers raided the circulation offices of the NY Times, Daily News, NY Post, and El Diario today "as part of a union corruption probe... Investigators were seeking paperwork related to the Newspaper and Mail Deliverers Union, which packages and delivers newspapers across the region." more ›

El Diario Endorses Thompson, Compares Bloomberg To Chavez

Yesterday, the city's largest Spanish newspaper, El Diario, endorsed City Comptroller Bill Thompson for Mayor. In its front page editorial, it says, "After a decade misspent lionizing the rich and their excesses, too many New Yorkers are paying the price for the decisions made in Washington, on Wall Street and in City Hall. What New York City needs is an executive with a balanced perspective towards development and growth, where families most in need are a high priority. This leader is Bill Thompson." more ›

Gillibrand Trying to Wave In Her New Ethnic Constituencies

Gillibrand Trying to Wave In Her New Ethnic Constituencies

Before marching in yesterday's Chinatown parade, new Senator Kirsten Gillibrand stopped by the Brooklyn offices of El Diario, the newspaper that recently featured her picture on the cover along with the headline "ANTI INMIGRANTE." The new senator has been trying to find common ground with state Democrats who are taking issue with some of her more conservative votes as a first term congresswoman in a district that previously had elected Republicans for the 25 years prior. After the meeting at El Diario with Hispanic lawmakers, Gillibrand told the press, "I think on some issues my positions will change. ... Others will become simply broader." more ›

Landlord and Rising Rent Fears in El Barrio

Landlord and Rising Rent Fears in El Barrio

Yesterday, East Harlem residents protested "greedy landlords" to raise concerns about gentrification. One resident, Otoniel Santiago, told amNew York that his $1,100 rent for his family's two-bedroom has zoomed up to $3,000 because of extra charges his landlord has added, "They said I had to pay or they would take legal action. I think they want us to get tired and move out, then they will bring in people who will pay $1,700 a month." more ›

Queens Shooting: The Fourth Man

Queens Shooting: The Fourth Man

Ever since the Saturday police shooting outside a Queens club that killed one man and injured two others, there has been talk of a fourth man in the group. Police have claimed that the undercover officers shot at them because they feared the men were armed, but no weapons were found on the men or in their car. The officers on the scene have insisted a fourth man in a beige jacket was near the car, and the Daily News reported that witnesses picked him out from two lineups. The police hope to speak to him, as they have been looking in the drains near the Kalua Lounge for a dumped gun. But a resident nearby told NY1, "If they find a gun, then none of the kids fingerprints is going to be on it. So that's just a waste of taxpayers' time." more ›

Spitzer's Transition

Spitzer's Transition

There's news about Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer's transition team (which includes El Diario publisher Rosanna Rosado and Time Warner Chairman and CEO Richard Parsons), but you can also visit the spiffy transition website. TransitionNY.org has some bios for Spitzer, Lieutenant Governor David Paterson, the transition team, and links to the state's various agencies. Okay, it's sort of thin on information now, as it's most notably an open call for people to apply for state jobs, but it's a nice idea - let's hope it's a usable resource. more ›

Arrests Outside Mexican Consulate Protest

Arrests Outside Mexican Consulate Protest

Yesterday, 12 people were arrested during a protest outside the Mexican Consulate. Hundreds of people gathered on East 39th Street to protest the death of Bradley Roland Will, a New York activist who went to Oaxaca to cover the months-long protest there between a teachers union and the government. Narco News has extensive coverage of the demonstration, which included one activist using a climbing harness owned by Will to climb onto a lamppost and hang a banner while another chained himself to the consulate's gate. Their demands?

1. All armed forces acting on behalf of the government against the people of Oaxaca be removed immediately; more ›

Ferrer Plays Election Blame Game

Ferrer Plays Election Blame Game

There's nothing like losing an election by 20 points to a billionaire incumbent mayor who outrageously overspent you to make you upset. Fernando Ferrer complained in El Diario that the news media and polling organizations helped bury him, making some people wonder if he's got a bad case of the sour grapes. Ferrer claims that reporters didn't take notes during his press conferences and polls were too concerned with huge margin Bloomberg had on him. Plus, the October 6 subway terror alert took attention away from the debate that Bloomberg never attended. The NY Times points out that Ferrer did "not place blame on himself at any point in the El Diario interview," but of course the Times would do that - the Times endorsed Bloomberg! We can't blame Ferrer for being incredibly bitter, but blaming the Post for running a pre-election cover that implied it was over for him is way too easy. Democratic strategist Joseph "Geraldine Who?" Mercurio thinks Ferrer should blame his own team, for not having a strong enough "anti-Bloomberg message." more ›
