Man Arrested For Robbing Elderly Woman Of $2

The silver lining to the depressing report that a 72-year-old woman was robbed—at gunpoint—for only two dollars in Farmingville, Long Island: Cops arrested a suspect. According to the police, Ryan Mercorella, 24, allegedly "drove up to a woman who was walking in the Kmart parking lot on Ocean Avenue about 3:40 p.m. Sunday... and asked her for change of a $10 bill. When she said she didn't have any money, Mercorella threatened to kill her, police said, and pulled out what appeared to be a handgun. The woman then opened her wallet, and Mercorella removed two dollars from it before driving off." Newsday reports that Mercorella was charged with first-degree robbery plus a number of other crimes.

Cornelius Abson, who admitted to choking and robbing an 85-year-old woman as well as robbing other victims, appeared in court last Friday. However, his arraignment was postponed because his lawyer requested a psychological exam.

Police are looking for a man who robbed an 85-year-old in a brutal attack. The attack took place in a Crown Heights apartment building's elevator--the victim Lillian France was headed up to visit a relative and about to get out at the 5th floor when a man grabbed her, put her in a chokehold until she lost consciousness, and robbed her of $900--and her cane. Here's the disturbing video:

Wow: When a man tried to rob 86-year-old Elizabeth Maropoulos in Hell's Kitchen on Sunday morning, she told the Post, "Once I realized he was coming after me, I went kick, kick!" Still, she was knocked down and robbed of $100. Luckily the thief, Earl Wearing, was caught--Maropoulos proclaimed him a "bad, bad boy. He's a bastard." And a bartender at the Blarney Stone, where Maropoulos is apparently a regular, said she's a tough lady, "She's taken swings at [troublemakers] and chased them with a broom. She's out there at night directing traffic and bouncing." In related news, police believe someone is targeting elderly women on Staten Island--two women have been shoved and robbed--and a woman has turned up on surveillance video using their credit cards.

The police are looking for two men suspected of robbing an elderly woman at gunpoint on Tuesday afternoon. As the woman entered her apartment on Neptune Avenue, police say two men "forced their way into the apartment, where the tied up the 73-year-old woman at gunpoint before taking her ATM card, pin number and assorted jewelry."
