Teens Vandalize Silver's LES Synagogue with Swastikas, Eggs

School's out—here comes trouble. Two teenagers have been arrested after they went on "an anti-Semitic spree" on Thursday afternoon in Manhattan. Two boys, 15 and 16 respectively, drew swastikas in black Sharpie on walls at both the Bialystoker Synagogue and the United Hebrew Center on the Lower East Side. At the Hebrew Center, they also lit off smoke bombs; at the synagogue, they hurled eggs and also wrote an anti-Semitic slur on the wall. The synagogue happens to be the East Broadway temple where Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has worshiped since he was four years old. Silver told NY1, "This is a crime, not against the synagogue; this is a crime against society. When people choose to desecrate a house of worship, it doesn't matter whether it's a church, a synagogue. It is just a despicable act that really should tug at the heartstrings of all of us." It's believed that a nearby surveillance camera led police to the two teens.

Cops Plead Guilty in 2007 Halloween Incident

Two police officers pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for charges related to the 2007 incident where they allegedly beat and then abandoned a 14-year-old boy—clad only in his underwear— in a Staten Island swamp. The cops had claimed they were trying to teach him a lesson, because he had been throwing eggs at cars on Halloween. The teen, Rayshawn Moreno, was left to walk a mile for help; last year, judge, noting how Moreno was left by railroad tracks and high-voltage lines, upheld the charge of unlawful imprisonment, "The victim was exposed to the 'risk' of serious physical injury." The cops had also tried to cover up the incident "by not filing proper police reports."

NYC the Blog learned that an after school program in East Harlem canceled today's programs "due to advice from the NYPD and school officials." The 25th Precinct "has been receiving leads them to believe their will be heightened gang activity by the Bloods Gang today in East Harlem, between the hours of 3-5pm." And over in Brooklyn, GerritsenBeach is calling tomorrow "D-Day", remembering the mischief on Halloween 2007: "A large crowd of teens pelted vehicles with eggs. It was like a firing range; buses were hit on both sides as they drove by." The patrol cars were also hit. The NYPD's website only reminds parents about trick-or-treat -related safety tips (PDF).
