A look at some noteworthy television this week:
All Hail the Chess Kings at Murrow
The kids in the Edward R. Murrow High School chess team won the national championship of the United Chess Federation in Milwaukee this past weekend. The team won the city and state championships earlier this year, but it was a half-point that pushed them to the top place. Last year, Murrow was tied for first (they've won first a total of six times), so this year's celebration at Chuck E. Cheese must have felt extra sweet.
Weekly Movie Guide
Once again, movie lovers have plenty to rejoice about over the next week. Three international heavyweights have new releases and we're not including Jodie Foster going crazy on an airplane in that equation. One of New York's most important production companies gets saluted at MoMA plus there's this little thing starting at Lincoln Center tomorrow night which should dominate much of the city's film landscape for the coming fortnight just as it does this week's .
High School Stabbing
Yesterday, a 15 year old student at Edward R. Murrow High School was stabbed outside the cafeteria. It's unclear whether or not the 9:45AM attack was by a fellow student or an outsider. According to some police sources, the victim interrupted a conversation amongst two girls and a third person, possibly not a student. The third person argued with the victim, and then stabbed the him. The victim received three stitches. Murrow, one of the best schools in the city, does have a system where students swipe their ID cards as they enter, which alarms students about security issues. But what about the knife? Isn't that more alarming than an intruder coming in? Gothamist thought most NYC high schools had metal detectors.
