The Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation is having a public meeting tonight to share the five designs for the island so far. The designers will be presenting and the public can offer feedback. The meeting is at 6:30PM at FIT (Reeves Great Hall, 28th Street and 7th Avenue), and you can see the designs here and wonder if you agree with what the NY Times' architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff thought about them, as he offered his opinion in today's paper.
The five conceptual proposals for redeveloping Governors Island, "The Park at the Center of the World," have been floating for over a week now. Maybe you saw the technicolor article in last week's New York Magazine. Or maybe you've swooned among the large-scale paradise boards on display at the Center for Architecture.
Two long-festering plans could come together: Redeveloping Governor's Island and bringing car racing to NYC. The NY Sun reports that the Indy Racing League might be interested in including a Governor's Island race in its circuit. A spokesman told the Sun:
"Governors Island certainly is something that has come up, but in terms of definitive plans, we still have a long way to go. We've had some discussions with people in the greater New York City area [ including the agency overseeing the island's development]. No single idea has been approved or shot down."Huh, "Greater New York City" could mean anything. And thought Indy Racing says there's a long way to go, given the way the development of Governor's Island has been going, waiting probably isn't a problem.
It makes total sense: The city has announced that the New York Harbor School may move to the Governors Island and be its first tenant. amNewYork notes the specialized public school, which teaches students about maritime issues, is currently landlocked in Bushwick. The NY Harbor School's program director is thrilled and the Governors Island Alliance calls it a "positive thing." GIA's Robert Pirani tells AMNY, "It sets the tone for the island as being a place for New York City, for being about education, for being about the harbor -- as opposed to being a casino, which has nothing to do with those things."
The Daily News revealed the top ten ideas in the running for the redevelopment of Governor's Island. Only 25 proposals were submitted, and while the other ideas may still be considered, these the ones the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation is "concentrating" on:

Professional golf is coming to Manhattan. Of course, it's on Governor's Island, only 9 holes, and it's a pro-am tournament which will feature professional women and Hollywood actors. The tournament, dubbed The Manhattan Golf Classic and scheduled for October 22nd, will be on the only golf course in all of Manhattan. Scenes from the tournament will surely be beautiful. With the historic buildings on the island, the Brooklyn and the Manhattan skyline as backdrops, the statue of liberty, and the sun setting? It seems like a producer's dream. The pros signed up to appear are Annika Sorenstam, Natalie Gulbis, and Hank Haney while the celebrities are Bruce McGill, Dennis Quaid, and Craig T. Nelson (Coach!!). The course is being leased for a mere $75,000 from the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation, but Newsday reports that the organizers already have $2 million in advertising lined up.
- Achieve financial self-sustainability and provide maximum return to GIPEC for the purpose of supporting public benefit uses. The last one is always a bitch. Here is the RFP. This tramway-gondola system would cost $125 million and the three stations would be in Battery Park, at Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, and at Governor's Island. Here's hoping it can happen, given the restrictions on the island's use.
