Thanks to Product Shop NYC (who also reports that the New Year's Eve act at Madison Square Garden will be...The Black Crowes), Gothamist is salivating over this year's New Yorker Festival line-up. Edie Falco! The RZA! Ricky Gervais! Trey Parker and Matt Stone! Sleater-Kinney! And Wallce and Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit! The New Yorker Festival runs September 23-25, and tickets will go on sale on August 25. The tickets range in price from $5 to $50, most being in the $15-30 area, and the programs range from the highbrow (reading by Ian McEwan, Town Hall Meeting on Iraq) to the delightfuly low (A Salute to the Three Stooges). Failure hurts, so there are a lot of miserable producers right about now, given the abundant number of Broadway shows which have recently posted closing notices. Sunday was the last day for Eve Ensler's The Good Body - we liked it, but it just didn't catch on with the masses. We can see how it wasn't exactly great date night fodder, but couldn't the city's female contingency keep it going a hair longer? On January 2nd, it's a double whammy for both Dracula The Musical and Bombay Dreams, each closing that day. Frankly, it's a miracle they lasted this long. Then it was announced that the Marsha Norman play 'Night Mother would be closing on January 9th. That one really didn't surprise us. Gothamist thought the acting (by Brenda Blethyn and Edie Falco) was stellar, but the play seemed melodramatic and dated. Playbill via Yahoo reports here on these and a few other shows also biting the dust.

The best thing about the Gruner+Jahr vs. Rosie O'Donnell trial is that with a comedian (comedienne?) as one of the litigants, there are great soundbites. Rosie editor Susan Toepfer claimed that Rosie said "As a lesbian, I'm uncomfortable being on a magazine cover holding another woman or touching another woman" regarding a proposed cover photograph that featured O'Donnell in between Lorraine Bracco and Edie Falco, which seems to be the latest in the crack G+J legal team's strategy of trying to make sure Rosie seems super gay and therefore incredibly insane. Rosie told reporters outside the courthouse, "I have never in my life said, 'As a lesbian, blah, blah, blah.' 'As a lesbian, pass the salt! As a lesbian, give me a Diet Coke!'" O'Donnell claims her problems with the cover photograph stemmed from the fact that it was unflattering. On this one, Gothamist has to side with Rosie. It's not so great.

One word: Boring. Okay, maybe seeing Edie Falco and Stanley Tucci together is cute, and we liked that Fred Rogers got two shout-outs, but come on - Doris Roberts for the third year in a row? Tyne Daly again? Gothamist spent our childhood watching Tyne Daly rack up FOUR Emmys for Cagney and Lacey - hey, Television Academy, she's talented, but spread the love. This is why no one cares about the Emmys, when Frasier or Kelsey Grammer wins year after year. John Larroquette won four Emmys in a row for Night Court - his randy D.A. Dan Fielding was funny, but not THAT funny. Ugh, we were right when the nominations came out earlier this summer: We weren't happy while watching.
