Federal Jobs Finally Here: Economic Stimulators, Mount Up!

All right, New Yorkers, you've heard about this so-called stimulus money for months. Now Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Paterson are letting you know it's time to grab...that...dough! One of the first projects funded by stimulus money got underway this week, building new retail space for much-needed restaurants and shops at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. And yesterday the big two in NY politics announced that stimulus money will fund 8,000 more summer jobs for teenagers than there were last year. Teens can apply at this website until May 15th for jobs at everywhere from small businesses to government agencies to Barnes & Noble. If kids need any convincing for more reason not to spend three months simply keying cars and finally going for extra bases on the sexual diamond, maybe they can find it in words from one electrician finding work for the first time in months at the Ferry Terminal. He told the News, "Personally, I'm just excited to be in a field that might actually benefit from the new ideas Obama is putting on the table."

Schumer Tries to Steer Stimulus Money to MTA and DOE

Senator Charles Schumer was sounding like a savior today for two agencies recently experiencing major budget woes: the Department of Education and the MTA. Schumer indicated that $1.8 billion of the stimulus bill that arrived in the Senate today should be heading toward city schools saying, "If they were to use that money to prevent massive layoffs of teachers, that would be the intention of what the money is for and that's a good thing." The mayor did not take any stimulus money toward education for granted in last Friday's "Doomsday budget." Schumer also proposed an amendment to the $819 billion stimulus package, calling for money going toward transit to nearly double the allocated amount to around $15 billion. While that money could not go toward the MTA's budget deficit that will likely lead to a fare increase, it could be used towards maintenance and new projects like the Second Avenue Subway.

Bloomberg on Obama's Economic Plan Speech: "Great"

Mayor Bloomberg, as well as other mayor from large cities, was on hand to head President-elect Obama outline an ambitious economic stimulus plan, one that includes a $1,000 tax cut for working families, a payroll tax cut and an infusion of $800 billion. Obama urged Congress to pass a stimulus plan, “I don’t believe it’s too late to change course, but it will be if we don’t take dramatic action as soon as possible. If nothing is done, this recession could linger for years. The unemployment rate could reach double digits.”

In between returning to Chicago from his weeklong vacation in Hawaii and his imminent move to Washington, President-elect Obama took a moment to drop his weekly address, where the focus was the economic stimulus package that he is putting together to present before Congress.

Pols Expect Federal Money for NY's Mass Transit Projects

Senator Charles Schumer and Representative Jerrold Nadler have been working with President-elect Barack Obama's transition team and say that NY State "is expected to get $4 billion" from an economic stimulus package. What's more, "most of it slated for mass-transit capital projects in the metro area."
