Hot Plates: The Time Out Eat Out Awards
We were fortunate enough to be at the Time Out New York Eat Out Awards last night to watch the winners of both the Readers' Choice awards, chosen by readers who made over 14,000 submissions, and the Critics' Picks awards, selected by the TONY staff. The coveted plates hang on restaurant and bar walls throughout the city.
Tidbits
- "The first rule of Milk Club is you don’t talk about Milk Club. The second rule of Milk Club is you do not talk about Milk Club." The Brooklyn Paper explores the raw milk movement in Brooklyn.
WNBC Will Get NYCTV Programming
WNBC, aka Channel 4, and the city have worked out a deal that will have NYC TV programs “$9.99,” “Blueprint NYC,” “Cool in Your Code,” “Eat Out NY,” and “New York 360° run on WNBC during the 11AM-12PM timeslot on weekdays. And, combined wtih four minutes of commercial time for city events and PSAs, the city hopes viewers will get to know more about the city. And Martha fans, don't worry - her show moves to 10AM, while Ellen moves to 4PM to go head-to-head with Oprah. Our only question is, will this mean WNBC reporters will get preferential treatment from City Hall?
The Day That Crab Was King
It might have been gloomy and drizzling outside, but inside of BLT Fish, at the first annual Crab Festival to benefit City Harvest, the mood was festive and the crabs were plentiful. Three floors of crab dishes as far as the eye could see -- crab legs from the BLT Fish raw bar, a Peekytoe Crab Salad from Bouley, a Crab Summer Roll with Chilled Crab Soup from Riingo, or Aunt Rae's Blue Crab Soup from City Crab, and many more.
Award Winners
Do you like kudoz? Well today is your lucky day. We've got not one, but two sets of awards for the price of one. First, Food & Wine Magazine announced their 2006 Best New Chefs at an event last night, and the list featured two New Yorkers: Jonathan Benno of Per Se and David Chang, from Momofuku, who seems to be the underdog darling of the national food scene these days (and after eating his noodles, we're not really all that surprised, frankly). Benno and Chang, along with their fellow winners from across the country, will be featured in Food & Wine's chef issue which will hit the stands on June 15th.
TONY Eat Out Awards
We're looking forward to eating our way through the list. Congratulations to all the winners!
Dine In Brooklyn
April 11-20 is Brooklyn's restaurant week -- Dine in Brooklyn. Close to 200 Brooklyn restaurants will offer three-course meals for a mere $19.55, in honor of the 1955 World Champion Brooklyn Dodgers. The website lists participating restaurants, broken down by neighborhood (how convenient!). Winner of the Time Out New York Eat Out Award for Best New Brooklyn Restaurant, Stone Park Cafe in Park Slope, is on the list and many restaurants are offering lunch specials as well. So, if you're one of those people who treat Brooklyn like a second-class city, get off your borough-phobic ass and go dine in Brooklyn. You won't regret it.
