Tomorrow many New Yorkers will be coming together to celebrate notions of rebirth and unity—not just in churches around town for Easter Sunday, but in Times Square as well for the lesser known and more violent "Gang Initiation Day." The Post says that the high holy day has become an annual ritual for local gangs—in 2006, they say that more than 200 gang members came through the area with three stabbings being reported. One cop told them, "It's the same nonsense every year. It's been going on a long time." The McDonald's in Times Square is one of many businesses that closed down in the wake of the '06 incidents and this year will have double its normal security on hand. a manager told the paper, "They come in, they throw chairs, they throw cups of ice at each other. It's a disaster."

As noted elsewhere, yesterday was the coldest Easter Sunday in 67 years. This past Christmas and New Year's were warmer, as was Martin Luther King's Birthday. Yesterday's temperatures were more appropriate for mid-February than early April and more snow fell during a Yankees game yesterday.

It was the coldest Easter Sunday in 67 years, but there were still lots of colorful and crazy hats on display during the Easter Parade. The parade also travels past St. Patrick's Cathedral, where Edward Cardinal Egan was smiling at the crowds. But the Post noted his Easter homily was more serious:

Eater attended Wednesday night’s announcement party at 7 World Trade Center and watched “everyone who has ever been on an episode of Top Chef” party like it was 1999, the not-so-distant year that Rocco DiSpirito was named a F&W Best New Chef.

A man involved in the shooting death of a 2 year old boy surrendered yesterday in the offices of a Bronx cable station, News 12. Nicholas Morris, 26, denied he shot David Pacheco Jr. in an interview with News 12 (he says he was blocks away), but Morris and another man, Ronneil Gilliam, had been identified as being in the group. Morris said he wanted to tell News 12 what happened before he would speak to the police who would mis him up. Apparently two aruging groups' initially exchanged "hard looks", which then turned into trashtalking and slaps - then gunfire on Easter Sunday, and then one of the bullets hit the minivan carrying the Pacheco family. Police are still looking for Gilliam.

This morning we woke up not at all surprised to see Jared Paul Stern still flagellating himself over at Gawker. But to be honest, we were getting kind of bored with the whole thing. The best part of JPS's first post was his last line and the first comment: "And, just in case you were wondering, yes I can tell who's really posting the Comments. I am, after all, the Editor." Followed by Nick Denton commenting "Um, actually, commenters are anonymous, if they want to be. I am, after all, the publisher." We read that, laughed and went to eat an Easter meal with our family. When we got back a few hours later those two lines were gone, and Gawker went a little cray-cray.

It looks as though the first line of rain has largely passed through the area. For the moment. More rain is expected for this evening. There's a slight chance of a thundershower because the air is unstable, but it won't be anything like last night's storm in Iowa. Tonight's rain will be the end of any precipitation for a while.
