Devils 6, Flyers 2: After three failed bids to get Martin Brodeur his 500th career win, the Devils finally provided him some margin of error. They played stingy defense and lit the lamp six times en route to an easy milestone win. Brodeur joins Patrick Roy as the only netminders with 500 wins. Dainius Zubrus got the party started and added an assist. As happy as the Devils are for Brodeur, they're probably happiest that...

  • After what must have been a disappointing finish with the Dallas Cowboys, former Giants, Patriots and Jets coach Bill Parcells retired on Monday. He's done this before of course, but he's older now, and this should be for real. Parcells' best tenure came with the Giants, when he won two Super Bowls and oversaw a player who revolutionized football in Lawrence Taylor. He also guided the Patriots to the big game before bailing on them to join the Jets, whom he led to within 30 minutes of another Super Bowl berth. Given the talent he worked with and the sorry state of the Jets franchise before he got there, Parcells deserves almost as much credit for the second stop in East Rutherford as the first.
  • Devils 4, Senators 3: Scott Gomez played the hero and scored twice and added an assist for the Devils, who own the Capitals. They're 11-1-1 against them in the last 13 games. With the Rangers in a nosedive, the Devils have taken advantage of the opportunity to open up a lead in the Atlantic Division.
  • Knicks 111, Bobcats 109 (2OT): Who would've thought that David Lee would be tipping in game-winning baskets at the end of second overtimes? It was a good night for the draft class of 2005; Lee won the game after Channing Frye poured in 30 points on 14-of-26 shooting. Only eight Knicks played -- thanks to plenty of brawl-related suspensions -- and Frye, Stephon Marbury and Jamal Crawford each logged over 50 minutes. With such a depleted bench, Coach Isiah Thomas will take a hard-fought win against one of the league's worst after a win over the elite Utah Jazz on Monday.
  • After bowing out in five games to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference semifinals iast season, the Nets didn't feel the need to retool their starting lineup. Who wouldn't be happy with Vince Carter, Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson and Nenad Krstic on the floor for the tipoff? Instead, they knew their reserves could be better, and that's the weakness they concentrated on in the offseason. Head coach Lawrence Frank should have a better team sitting next to him this season.

Going into last night's game, the Nets lost 9 straight games, including the playoffs, to the Miami Heat. Shaquille O'Neal sat out the game with an injury and the game came down to the final moments. Trailing by as many as 10 points in the 4th quarter, the Nets managed to tied the game with 45 seconds left. From there, it was the officials that decided the game.

When Gothamist thinks of the Knicks of recent years, a team that plays competitively against the best teams in the league doesn't really come to mine. Sure, they can compete in their payroll figures, but on the court, it's hardly been pretty. Imagine our surprise then, when the Knicks hung close with the Miami Heat last night. The Knickerbockers managed to hang in the game until Dwyane Wade hit a fadeaway jumpshot at the end of the game to give the Heat a 98-96 victory and a spot in the playoffs.

The Heat started well and never really let the Knicks into the game, capitalizing on the Knicks' lack of an actual center by, as Bill Walton might say, throwing the ball to the big fella and getting out of the way. Shaq had 33 along with 18 rebounds to lead Miami, while Dwayne Wade added 21 as he continues his ascent to stardom (having Shaq on his team seems to have helped a lot). As for the Knicks, they shot almost 51% for the game but were outrebounded handily and didn't get enough shot attempts to climb back in the second half.
