Cop's Blood Alcohol Was Double Legal Limit During Crash

Those blood alcohol tests finally came back, and it can safely be concluded that the off-duty cop that crashed on the Bronx River Parkway was intoxicated at the time. In fact, Hoyong Kim's blood alcohol content was 0.16—twice the legal limit. Kim and Officer Edwin Paulino had allegedly been out until 5 a.m. at a birthday party, where Kim was named the designated driver. more ›

Off-Duty Cop Arrested For DWI After Crashing Into Toll Plaza

Yesterday, the AP reported that an off-duty cop was arrested for DWI in Queens—and now there are details. According to charges, the Post reports that veteran detective James O'Connell "was busted...for drunken driving after he smashed into a tollbooth at the Midtown Tunnel in Queens...[He] was allegedly driving home from a holiday party when he smacked into the lane’s gate arm at the toll plaza around 2 a.m." more ›

Detective in Fatal Crash Was Still Very Drunk Over 5 Hours Later

The off-duty NYPD detective who fatally struck an elderly pedestrian early Friday morning in the Bronx had a blood alcohol level of 0.21 percent almost six hours after the accident. Despite delaying the test for hours by refusing to cooperate without a warrant, 22-year NYPD veteran Kevin Spellman, 42, was still very intoxicated. (The legal limit is 0.08 percent.) Spellman's alcohol level was certainly much higher at the time of the crash, but because people metabolize alcohol at different rates, it's anyone's guess how wasted he was at 6:30 a.m. more ›

Sharpton Tells Community To Watch Accused DWI Cop Case

A few days after a cop was indicted for vehicular manslaughter and DWI for the death of Vionique Valnord, her family appeared with the Reverend Al Sharpton yesterday. NY1 reports that Sharpton told his supporters to monitor Police Officer Andrew Kelly's trial, "It is important this this officer faces justice, so that people understand that the law is the law no matter who breaks the law. You don't get a break. There's no excuse for a policeman to be driving drunk." more ›

Now Witness Says DWI Cop Did Try to Resucitate

Last week the Daily News published a sensational quote from an anonymous source that completely refuted claims that alleged drunk-driving cop Andrew Kelly worked feverishly to save his victim's life, performing mouth-to-mouth and even resuscitating her momentarily. The source said, "That story is a bunch of bull. He barely touched the girl. His hands were almost on her stomach, not her chest. His mouth never even touched her mouth." Well, that was last week... more ›

NYPD Chief Says We'll Never Know How Drunk DWI Cop Was

NYPD Chief Says We'll Never Know How Drunk DWI Cop Was

Yesterday Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly acknowledged that it will be "impossible" for prosecutors to determine how drunk an off-duty cop was when he fatally ran over a Brooklyn woman Saturday night. The family of Vionique Valnord is outraged that officer Andrew Kelly was able to successfully postpone having his blood tested for alcohol for over seven hours after the accident, and the Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating whether other officers helped him sober up. When finally tested, Kelly scored a perfect zero on the test, making the DWI charges against him problematic. more ›
