11-Year-Old Arrested For Putting Razor Blade On Slide

This is messed up: A 6-year-old was gashed when sliding down a playground slide in Dutchess County—because a razor blade was placed there! Police arrested an 11-year-old boy for putting the razor there (investigators found the razor "had been inserted into the slide through a hole created from underneath the slide, so that just the edge of the blade stuck up into the slide and would cut anyone sliding down") and apparently the boy had vandalized the Pleasant Valley playground before. The victim, Sean Yambo, required 30 stitches to close up the laceration (it's pretty gory-looking). His father told WCBS 2, "It was horrifying to say the least. Every night we're changing the gauze and what not. The pain, the agony, the screaming," and added, "I feel bad for the other kid who was involved who did it. He's 11, so something is wrong with him, too."

2008_07_pressm.jpgA judge "modified" an order of protection that had banned 48-year-old Theodore Pressman from seeing his mother. Earlier this week, Pressman was charged with reckless endangerment after leaving his elderly parents in a hot car for hours while he went to work his shift as a bus driver in Peekskill. Both parents suffer from dementia, and while his mother was able to get out of the car, his father died, apparently from the sweltering heat. Pressman's mother is reportedly anorexic and will only eat when her son is present. Pressman has been described a loving, devoted son who was perhaps overwhelmed.

There's nothing like hearing that a man suspected of rapes in Dutchess County ran from police and took a Metro-North train headed to Grand Central Terminal. The Poughkeepsie Journal reports that on both November 28 and December 6, there were incidents of a home invasion and then rape in the village of Pawling, and Flaviano Quintero was being questioned about them. As Dutchess County investigators were speaking with him yesterday, Quintero then "jumped out a...

Quick! What's scarier than a ghost, ghoul, or goblin? It's Dick Cheney...hunting! Everyone around the Valley Rod & Gun Club in Dutchess County better stock up on all the orange clothing they can find because the Vice President is going to be in your back yard. The Poughkeepsie Journal first reported Thursday that Cheney is coming to upstate New York for a hunting trip. He's expected to arrive Sunday night at Stewart airport and to go hunting on Monday.

Mort & Ray Productions—organize more than 200 of the fairs. Vendors pay $100 to $400 to participate in each event, with profits split between the production company and the nonprofit sponsor. The city receives 20 percent of the total vendor fees, which is used for police overtime and other expenses.

February 22: From Disaster to Dessert – the Fate of New Orleans Food

We've read "Fast Food Nation." We've seen "Super Size Me." And, we've been queasy about fast food monoliths like McDonald's, Burger King and Taco Bell ever since. But, does fast food always have to mean bad food? (Not that Mickey D's fries aren't tasty - It's just that a large portion contains 520 calories, with 220 of those calories coming from fat.)

It seems that an ex Bouley/Chanterelle chef will retreat to upstate, buy a mobile kitchen, and sell Memphis BBQ ribs roadside, and Gothamist says, "Thank God, but why can't the roadside be a little closer to the 1/9 station?" The Times looks at Warren Nordling's Dutchess County ribs operation. The Times' Ed Levine thinks they are the best ribs within 90 miles of the city. The ribs are smoked for 8 hours and the dry rub is made with brown sugar, garlic salt, granulated onion, cumin, paprika and chili powder. Nordling also makes Thai rice in the smoker.
