Bruni two-stars Michael Symon's Parea, says "his food speaks clearly and persuasively, articulating a repositioning of Greek cuisine." Gothamist liked it when we visited, too, especially the house-cured meats.

September 25-29: Latin Beer Tasting
Today, the store Giant Robot, known in L.A. and San Francisco for its selection of cool toys, books and clothes (hello, Mr. Dob), opens a New York location - Giant Robot New York - in the East Village. And tonight, there's an opening reception from 6-10PM, with sponsors like Dumpling Man, Glaceau, Uglydoll and Matador/Beggars (we suspect there will be eats, good tunes, and, hopefully, a lifesize Jeero!)! Plus, the artwork of Eishi Takaoka (whose sculpture is on the cover of Haruki Murakami's Kafka on the Shore) will be displayed for through July.
On one of Gothamist’s favorite restaurant strips in the East Village, the block of St. Mark’s Place between 1st Avenue and Avenue A, sits an anomalous tree and a creperie beside it, the Crooked Tree Café. Tucked across the street from another Gothamist favorite, Hummus Place, and down the street from Dumpling Man, Crooked Tree offers sweet and savory crepes and both hot and cold sandwiches, filling a niche neither of the other eateries nearby quite satisfies.
It's not hard to spend $440 dollars on food in New York, even if you decide to do it at 44 different places. This weekend, New York Daily News wraps up 100 spots to eat for $10 or less. Their rules: "Find 100 places where you can have a meal for less than $10 without tax, tip or alcohol. No fast-food chains, no coffee shops and no slices." Fair enough. Their list includes some of our favorites, like Zaragoza for fantastic $2 tacos, Caracas for arepas, Margon for Dominican cuisine, Sapore for neigborhood Italian, and places we've highlighted here at Gothamist Food: Dumpling Man, Bereket, Hummus Place, and the Chip Shop.
We all sang songs about the Muffin Man as kids, but what about the Dumpling Man? With growing fondness for the East Village block of St. Mark’s Place between 1st Avenue and Avenue A, where hoards of cheap eats including Hummus Place, Crif Dogs, Yaffa Café, and the chocolate shop Australian Homemade take residence, Gothamist and friends stopped in to see how the Dumpling Man (100 St. Mark’s Place) stood up to their bargain competitors.
The New York Daily News reports that The Dumpling Man is now open on St. Mark's Place, serving
seared and steamed dumplings in the classic northern Asian style. That means fillings - including pork, chicken and calamari - are blended with herbal juices to boost moistness and flavor. Wrappers are rolled out individually so they're pillowy, not doughy. About $3.50-$4.50 for six pieces. The casual specialty spot also serves miso soup, salad and red bean shaved ice.Gothamist noticed Dumpling Man's smiling face last week and was hoping that it would be opening soon.
