This may be the most boring, yet enjoyable, weather post we've ever written. A high pressure system at the surface and a ridge of high pressure aloft means that clear skies will rule today, tomorrow, Sunday, Monday and probably Tuesday. We should see a high in the upper 60s this afternoon which is just about normal for this time of year.
Extremely Pleasant Fall Weather For The Weekend
A Dry Week Ahead, Possibly Followed by Hurricane Irene
Nearly two inches of rain over the weekend making this month the second rainiest August on record in Central Park. We're now only 0.77 inches behind the 1995 record of 12.36 inches. With ten days remaining and hurricane Irene potentially coming up the East Coast there is a fighting chance we'll break that old record.
Sun, Sun, And More Sun On The Way
A cold front passed through the city very early this morning, sweeping away most of the humidity. The dew point temperature has been steadily dropping from its disgusting peak of 73 degrees at 3 a.m. and will continue to do so for the rest of the day. The lack of humidity and clear skies except for a few fair weather cumulus, means we should warm up nicely to the mid 80s this afternoon.
Cloudy Mother's Day Weekend Expected
Mostly sunny skies are expected today as high pressure takes a brief pause over the Mid-Atlantic region. It's dry as a bone out there, with the dew point currently running about thirty degrees under the air temperature. Combine that dry air with a brisk west wind and there's an elevated threat for fire spread according to the National Weather Service. Today's high will be in the lower 70s.
Mostly Pleasant Week Ahead
After scraping Bermuda yesterday, hurricane Igor is pretty much directly east of the city today. Way to the east, thanks to a dome of high pressure slinking southward from the Great Lakes. About all Igor is doing for the area is churning up nasty rip currents and beach erosion along the coast. Unless you are in the water, the bigger concern today is the threat of brush fires from the low humidity and high winds. The high will be in the mid 70s but the temperature will plummet as the winds die down after sunset. Look for a low in the mid 50s in the city and 40s in the 'burbs.
Summer Drawing To A Close
This morning's cool breeze was a not too subtle hint that summer 2010 will be around for only one more week. In addition to the wind the humidity is really low, so watch out for brush fires. The high today will be near 75, which is actually a couple of degrees warmer than normal.
Excessively Pleasant Labor Day Weather
This may be the most boring forecast ever. With high pressure overhead we've got us a clear, dry and mellow Labor Day. Look for a high around 80 degrees. Perfect for the parade! That high pressure system will slide eastward overnight. The resulting wind shift should warm the city into the mid 80s tomorrow.
Very Pleasant Weather Arriving for the Weekend
For such innocuous weather there's a lot going on behind the scenes today. A weak cold front passed through the city last night. Dry air is arriving sooner than cool air behind the front. The asynchronous arrival times will cause a rapid warm up today. It won't be nearly as uncomfortable as the last two days but the afternoon high will likely reach 90 degrees.
Seasonable Start to Week's Weather
In addition to busting windows, yesterday afternoon's cold front passage put an end to a week-long warm spell. For seven straight days the high ran at least ten degrees above normal. Unusually, the day-to-day change in high temperature did not vary by more than two degrees during that time. Behind the front today's high should be near the normal of 77 degrees.
Finally Less Humid
A cold front passed through the region last night and slowly tagging along behind it is some drier air. The dew point temperature has dropped by ten degrees, making venturing outside a whole lot more bearable. The dry air means sun mixed with clouds and a slight chance of late-afternoon showers as the sunlight heats things up to the mid 80s.
Dry for the Fourth
There's one more day of rain to contend with before the dry weekend. Two upper level disturbances are going to pass overhead today. You know the drill, look out for scattered showers and thunderstorms from early this afternoon through the evening. These are expected to be slow-moving storms, so they may dump lots of rain where they strike. Also, small hail and gusty winds. We'll see highs from the mid 70s to near 80.
A Beautiful Day
The sign says it all. The weather doesn't get much better than a sunny and 70 degree April day. Or does it? The air is bone dry and the wind is going to pick up later, leading the weather service to issue a Red Flag Warning, which means "critical fire weather conditions are occurring or imminent". Look out for brush fires, Staten Island!
Bundle Up For the Mets' Home Opener
Bone dry air has moved into town following Saturday's half-inch of rain, no doubt aiding and abetting yesterday's Staten Island brush fires. As the winds died down the lack of humidity allowed the temperature to plummet overnight. This morning's lows bottomed out near the freezing mark across the city. The dry air mass will move eastward today, allowing the mercury to rebound to almost 60 this afternoon (BTW, could NY1's weather page be any worse?). It should be in the mid 50s when Mike Pelfrey throws the first pitch at Citi Field's regular season debut.
Sunshine on Our Shoulders All Week
After a cool August, September is running more than three degrees warmer than normal. That flip has largely been due to the incursion of hot and humid air dragged this far northward by Hanna and Ike. Yesterday's oppressive humidity, the dew point reached an icky 73 degrees, has been ushered away by an early morning cold front. The cool air behind the front won't get here until tomorrow, so for today we'll have to settle for a sunny, breezy and dry day with a high in the mid-80s.
Gustav Makes Landfall, Hanna May Trouble NYC
Not much happening in New York City weather today, or much of this week for that matter. A high pressure system parked upstate should keep things sunny, warm and dry through Thursday. Expect highs in the mid 80s each day. Wear plenty of sunscreen if you're going out to the West Indian American Day parade today. Next weekend we may need to concern ourselves with Tropical Storm Hanna.
Abundant Sunshine Through Weekend
The first line of the Weather Service's forecast discussion contains all you need to know about the forecast "High pressure will remain over the region through Sunday." There is no chance of rain and barely the chance for a cloud to appear for the next several days. The high will be to the west of the city today and tomorrow, allowing lots of cool dry air to filter into town. The high today will only reach the mid 70s. Tomorrow's high may creep into the low 80s.
Relief for a Day
The dew point dropped like a rock yesterday afternoon leading to clear skies and much more comfortable weather overnight. A little breeze, low humidity and a high in the upper 80s will make today nearly picture perfect. Get out and enjoy it while you can as the relief will be short. The high pressure system bringing the dry air isn't all that large. Once it moves offshore tomorrow winds will shift to come out of the south, bringing warmer and more humid air. Tomorrow's high temperature should push 90 degrees.
