According to the News, Department of Sanitation cops cuffed him until the NYPD got there. (Sanitation cops carry handcuffs?!) Fortunately, no one was injured in the crash, and charges against the driver are pending. To be sure, crashing in front of the courthouse was a nice gesture, but next time he wants to help streamline government services, he should drive drunk over to Rikers.

L.I. DWI Driver 2X Over Legal Blood Alcohol Limit
Jose Borbon, accused of killing a Suffolk County police officer while driving drunk, apparently had a 0.19 blood alcohol level—twice the legal limit of 0.08. Prosecutors said that the test was administered 3 hours after the crash; chief trial prosecutor John Collins said, "I think it follows logically and scientifically that that (the BAC) was well higher at the time of the crash." Newsday reports that, based on that evidence judge raised Borbon's bail from $75,000 to $500,000. Borbon had a previous DWI in January and was driving with a conditional license where he could only drive to and from work—but on early Sunday morning, he allegedly plowed into Officer Glen Ciano's police cruiser, which then burst into flames, killing Ciano. Mothers Against Drunk Driving Long Island spokeswoman Denna Cohen was incredulous over the conditional license to Newsday, "To me, it's like somebody shoots you and you say, 'You know what? You need this gun for your protection, so we'll give it back to you.'"
DWI Victim's Family Outraged at Wall Street Exec's Plea Deal
The family of a drunk driving victim is crying foul after it was revealed earlier this week that the driver was able to cop a plea that will only land him in jail for eight consecutive weekends. George Anderson was able to land such a light sentence after the DA's office relied on "comparative negligence" reasoning because victim Florence Cioffi was also intoxicated and stepped out from between two parked cars when she was struck by the Wall Street executive's SUV. Cioffi's companion of 18 years says, "I'm not saying that man has to go to jail for life, or 10 years or 11, but 16 days and on weekends? That's ludicrous. It's a rich man's sentence." The family disputes the DA's claim that they were consulted before the plea was struck and plan to attend the sentencing in hopes that they can get the case pushed to a trial. An attorney for the family tells WCBS, "It seems to me [the DA's office] were trying to fly this one under the radar. They didn't want to make a stink about it. They didn't want everyone to know what was going on." The News says that the Cioffis are planning to sue Anderson.
Prosecutor: Drunk Driver Hit Drunk Pedestrian
Almost a year ago, a drunk driver fatally struck a woman on Water Street in lower Manhattan. George Anderson, who was found to be drunk, was charged with vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. Florence Cioffi, the victim, had been out with friends, and prosecutors had said Anderson was driving 60 MPH (the speed limit is 30 MPH). Now the Post reports that Anderson managed to get a break because Cioffi's blood alcohol content was apparently twice the legal limit. Anderson's lawyer said, "An intensive investigation by the defense and prosecutors revealed she probably stepped out from between two parked cars." Anderson, who could have faced up to 7 years in prison, will get "eight weekends in jail, do 200 hours of community service and pay a $350 fine" in his plea deal.
