Sigh. Nearly 3.5 inches of rain has fallen out of this latest storm, the illegitimate child of former tropical storm Lee and a cold front. We're exaggerating a bit, as September's normal rainfall is 4.23 inches, but several inches of rain is not really needed at this time. Have you noticed how coffee-colored the Hudson is? Here's a neat NASA satellite comparison showing what happens when Irene discharged several years worth of sediment into the river within a couple of days.
Another Day, Another Month Of Rain
Rain Today, Heavy Rain Tomorrow, More Rain On Wednesday
This week's weather can be summed up in one word: cloudyrainycool. The jet stream is constipated with a blocking ridge over the Atlantic. As a result the long waves of the atmosphere are not moving eastward. Instead there's an upper-level trough over the southeastern states that is quickly becoming a cut-off low. That low is just going to churn all week long, bringing cool easterly winds and lots of moisture to the New York region.
Cloudy and Rainy Until The End of Time
The omega block that brought lots of sun to the city this week has started to move eastward. This would be unremarkable except it looks as though the ridge of high pressure will re-build and park itself over the Mid-Atlantic. With nowhere to go the trough of low pressure that's replacing the ridge will stall just to our west. Get ready for clouds and rain, people, days and days of clouds and rain.
Warm Southern Rain On Its Way
Wasn't that some lovely weather this weekend? Three straight days with highs in the 60s have chipped away at November's cold start. By mid-week the monthly temperature should be back to normal. More warm weather is happening today under overcast skies as a dying cold front passes through the region. Look for a high really, really close to 60 degrees.
Cool, Drizzly Start to Work Week
Oh noes, it's the coldest day since May! It looks like today's high temperature will fail to reach 60 degrees for the first time since May 12th. A dawdling low pressure system off the Delaware coast and high pressure over the Midwest are conspiring to bring plenty of clouds and gusty northerly winds to the city today. Down near the ground there's still a decent gap between the air and dew point temperatures. That gap is keeping precipitation to a drizzle right now but somewhat heavier rain will arrive later today as the humidity increases.
Several Sunny Days in Store
Well, it is another rainy, foggy day thanks to a low pressure system just south of Cape Cod. After three days that system is finally beginning to move northward. There is one last line of rain to contend with but that should be gone by this evening.
A Gray Thanksgiving Week
Aye, the easterly wind... Weak low pressure southeast of the city means we're in for several days of dingy gray weather. The ocean winds will produce a thick blanket of stratus clouds which will keep the temperature nearly steady in the upper 40s to lower 50s through tomorrow. To add to the rawness there may be periods of drizzle or light rain between this afternoon and Tuesday morning.
Better Weather Ahead
Today's rain is courtesy of a warm front moving up the east coast. A few episodes of light rain are possible before the front passes through town around the time the Yankees take the field. The clouds ahead of the slow-moving front will keep today's high in the upper 60s. If that's not warm enough for you hop on the next NJ Transit train to Trenton, where it will be in the upper 70s.
Quick Lick of Warm Air Possible Today
If we are lucky Mother Nature will give us a warm weather quickie this afternoon. A warm front has brought fog and drizzle to town this morning. A heavier shower or two may occur before early afternoon. A cold front is quickly catching up to the warm front and will sweep away any moisture once it arrives early this evening. A narrow tongue of warm air may snake its way up between the two fronts and give northeastern New Jersey and the western portions of the city a quick licking. If that happens the temperature will briefly zip into the lower 60s. If that doesn't happen the highs will be in the mid 50s.
Sunny by Sunday
Another gloomy day today. There's a slight chance of showers but that chance will diminish as the coastal low that has brought all the clouds and drizzle finally begins to move out of the picture. The lingering tropical air will keep the temperature in the mid 60s for much of the day and it won't cool off much tonight.
Drizzly, Tropical November
We've got an odd mix of tropical and winter weather visiting the city this week. The tropical is the warm and humid air mass that is upon us. Highs will be in the low to mid 60s today and tomorrow and possibly into the upper 60s on Friday. More tropical feeling will be morning lows in the mid 50s, which is more like the normal high for early November.
Cloudy Cool Weekend Ahead
Today marks the sixth straight cool day and it looks like it will take until Monday for seasonable temperatures to return. A minor atmospheric skirmish will keep temperatures down through the weekend. In one corner a warm front is approaching from the south. In another corner a high pressure system is slinking down from eastern Canada. It appears that the high will cause the warm front to stall before it passes through the city, leaving us on the cool, wet side of things.
