There's speeding, and then there's speeding. Early Sunday morning, Nassau County Police arrested Joseph Melendez after he was caught speeding on the Long Island Expressway at speeds of 122 mph and 126 mph. The police said, "During the process of following and bringing Melendez to a stop, other motorists on the road were observed being forced to take evasive action in order to avoid becoming involved in a collision."

Off-Duty Firefighter Yells At Cabbie, Gets Arrested For DWI
Road rage never pays off: An off-duty firefighter got into a shouting match with a cab driver while on an Upper West Side street...and he also managed to get arrested for drunk driving. According to the Daily News, "Sean Farrell, 36, was driving a 2005 Ford Explorer north on Amsterdam Ave. at 3:15 a.m. when a yellow cab pulled in front of him near W. 79th St... When the vehicles stopped at a red light, Farrell began screaming at the cabbie - which caught the attention of a passing cop, police said." The police then determined he was drunk and charged him with DWI; the FDNY has suspended him for 30 days without pay from his position at Engine Co. 250 in Parkville, Brooklyn.
Powell Acquitted Of DWI, Convicted Of Lesser Charge
A jury found Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV not guilty of driving while intoxicated, but convicted the uptown politician of the traffic violation of driving while impaired—a lesser offense that can carry up to 15 days in jail. The judge gave the Powell a $300 fine and rejected a prosecutor's request to outfit the lawmaker's car with a device that would keep it from starting if it detected alcohol. "What happened to me is what's probably happened to most, if not, all young men of color in this country," Powell, 47, told the Post. "When cops lie, anybody can be guilty."
Alleged DWI Cop's Mother Blames Pedestrians
After Jersey City cop Martin Abreu was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, after allegedly striking two pedestrians—killing one and injuring the other—his mother defended him. The Daily News reports that a woman who identified herself as Abreu's mother said, "It was her fault," referring to 26-year-old Marilyn Feng, who died while crossing West Street at Albany in Battery Park City. The woman added, "So my son went out and had a couple of drinks. He deserves to have a good time now and then."
