Pulitzer Prize-Winning Illegal Immigrant Reporter's License Revoked

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Illegal Immigrant Reporter's License Revoked

Last month, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an illegal immigrant in a NY Times Magazine story about his years trying to escape detection with fake documents and continue his successful life. He detailed how he was able to get a driver's license in Washington state, "The license is valid until 2016. This offered me five more years of acceptable identification — but also five more years of fear, of lying to people I respect and institutions that trusted me, of running away from who I am." Except now Washington has revoked his license. more ›

Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge Crash Driver Didn't Have License

Early yesterday morning, a car careened off an Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge ramp and into a Long Island City building, resulting in injuries for the driver and passenger. This was the second accident off the ramp in nine days—and the car hit the same store, a beauty salon. Business owners declared the recently-renovated ramp a "death trap" as cops arrested the driver for aggravated unlicensed driving. more ›

Frank Bruni Gets His Driver's License

Frank Bruni Gets His Driver's License

Like any good New Yorker, Frank Bruni can't drive. Well, he could, but after a long residence in the city he let his license expire. However, after he was pick-pocketed in May, the former Times food critic needed to take the driver's test again, and was terrified. He chronicles the red tape he had to slice through just to take the test, which culminated in his test with the dreaded "Examiner X": more ›

Photo Of Lowery's Mom Shows Up On Stein's License

Investigators originally had their eye on Natavia Lowery's mother after the murder of Linda Stein. Allegedly Lottie Lowery-Walsh's photograph showed up on several doctored copies of Stein's driver's license, which were found in Stein's desk, used by Lowery when she was her assistant. One source told the NY Post, "It was Natavia's mother—that's whose picture it was. It was her own mother. This, we thought, was huge. Who knows what Natavia—with or without her mother—was up to with that." Lowery was just sentenced to over 30 years in prison for bludgeoning Stein to death, as well as stealing $30,000+ from her. Her mother has not been charged with anything, even though at least $10,000 of that stolen cash ended up in one of her bank accounts and was used to pay Lowery's legal fees. more ›

Harlem Is Apparently Located in "New Yoerk, NY"

Harlem Is Apparently Located in "New Yoerk, NY"

The Harlem DMV must be trying to make some sort of secession move. One New York teacher recently got her license renewed uptown, but upon receiving it in the mail discovered she was actually living in "New Yoerk, NY." We're assuming a teacher would have legible handwriting, so this mistake is on the DMV (which obviously needs more persnickety commenters). To get it fixed, she'll either have to pay the $17.50 for a mail-in change of address application, or go back to the DMV and wait in line again! This is how they treat an organ donor?! more ›

Things Harold Ford Forgot to Do Before Leaving TN

Things Harold Ford Forgot to Do Before Leaving TN

Harold Ford Jr.—the probable opponent for Kirsten Gillibrand’s senate seat—likes to say he’s no carpetbagger, but he forgot to tie up a few loose ends when he left his home state of Tennessee. “I am a New Yorker, I am a New Yorker,” he repeated mantra-like on MSNBC, and yet he’s never filed a tax return for his Wall Street job in the state. Not just that, he still owns a condo in Memphis. According to his web site, he splits his time between New York and Tennessee. Need more damning facts? He has a Tennessee driver’s license (which is actually illegal for a New York resident it turns out) and has never voted in New York. more ›

What Suspended NY License? DWI Driver Gets NJ License

The drunk driver who hit a Nassau County police officer early Sunday morning managed to "beat the system" by getting a NJ license even while his NY driver's license was suspended. The cop, Kenneth Baribault who had just pulled over a different DWI driver, was in his patrol car when Rahiem Griffin plowed into the cruiser with his Merecedes at 75MPH. more ›

Spitzer May Shift Gears Again on Driver's License Plan

Spitzer May Shift Gears Again on Driver's License Plan

Governor Spitzer may back off his controversial plan to offer driver's licenses to illegal immigrants after weeks of bipartisan criticism. During a trip to San Juan, Puerto, Spitzer didn't quite rule out shelving the plan, acknowledging, "It's a tough issue." Spitzer's aides are apparently worried that the issue is preventing the governor "from advancing or even discussing other matters." The issue is disliked by voters, elected officials, and pundits all around - and also... more ›

Spitzer's License Plan Generally Disliked

Spitzer's License Plan Generally Disliked

Governor Spitzer's revised plan to offer driver's licenses to all New York State residents - including illegal immigrants - is still not a hit with constituents. NY1 conducted a poll which found 55% of voters are opposed to the "three-tier plan" Spitzer revealed last week. Spitzer's original plan, which would have given illegal immigrants broad access to a regular driver's license, was hailed by immigrants' rights advocates and damned by county clerks and figures such... more ›
