Police believe a man killed in a drive-by shooting in Baychester yesterday might have been targeted because he allegedly owed money to a drug dealer. The victim—described as a black man in his 40s—was driving a Chevrolet Impala when a dark sedan pulled up beside him at the corner of Eastchester and E. Gun Hill roads at 12:15 p.m. and fired several shots, the Daily News reports. The victim's car then rolled into a sidewalk and flipped over. "I saw a man inside. He was bleeding profusely from his nose and ears. He was not moving at all," said Kelvin Akpovwa, 27, who tried to pull the victim from the vehicle. "In this neighborhood, I've seen accidents but never violence like this."
Cops: Bronx Drive-By Might Be Tied To Drug Debt
Bed-Stuy Shooting Victim's Mother Wants Justice
After the early evening drive-by shooting that killed two and injured another on Thursday night, a victim's mother spoke out. Antoine Stokes, 20, and 15-year-old Steven Hill were fatally shot by gunmen in a SUV as they sat on their Bedford-Stuyvesant stoop, while Derrick Henry, 14 or 16, was wounded. Stokes' mother Ernestine said her son was in the wrong place at the wrong time, adding he even worried about the violence in the neighborhood, "I just want you to catch his killer and get these crimes off the street because it's too bad that you have to lose your child over stupidness that he didn't do." Yesterday, the Daily News said that locals were weary of the drug-related violence, with a school principal saying, "There's a street turf war around here. We've been putting up with this for too long."
Brooklyn Drive-By Shooting Leaves 2 Dead, 1 Wounded
Yesterday, right before 6 p.m., gunmen in an SUV opened fire on a group of people sitting on a stoop in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Steven Hill, 15, and Antoine Stokes, 20, were both shot multiple times and later pronounced dead while Derek Henry, (either 14 or 16), is in stable condition at Kings County Hospital. The NY Times spoke to witnesses, who said "the three youths were caught off guard when a car drove by and a barrage of shots — as many as 20, some estimated — poured out its windows"; one added, "I saw people running and screaming, scattering all over the place. Any place they could find a place to hide." According to the Daily News, "A three-way feud among rival groups sparked" the violence. "The beef involved the gunned-down group, which hung out on Bainbridge St., and competing crews from the Brevoort Houses in Ocean Hill and the Jackie Robinson Houses in Manhattan, the police source said." The Post, which suggests that Hill may have been the target, reports, "Community activist Tony Herbert said cops told him the shooting was in retaliation for a robbery earlier in the day."
Woman Killed in Drive-By Shooting at Queens Party
A 22-year-old woman who had survived being shot in the torso just this past spring was shot again at the same spot Saturday in a drive-by, this time the incident proving fatal. Shante Graham was at a party with friends on Nashville Boulevard in St. Albans when two men opened fire from inside a dark sedan at around 12:30 a.m. yesterday morning. Graham was shot in the stomach and would later be pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital. Two other people at the party were shot and treated at other hospitals, both listed in stable condition. Graham had just attended a memorial earlier in the day Friday for a friend who was killed in a domestic dispute. Graham's mother told the Times that her daughter had fallen in with a bad crowd, saying, “She was around negative people, doing nothing, hanging in the streets, not doing anything with herself.” ' Her mother also added that Graham aspired to be a school safety officer or a crew member at JFK. Police found the vehicle the shots were fired from near the party, abandoned in a parking lot.
Three, Including Sanitation Worker, Shot in Flatbush
Yesterday around 7 p.m., a drive-by gunman fired at three people on Lenox Road near Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn (here's video of the area after the shooting). One of the victims was a sanitation worker, in a street sweeper, who had taken a break to get a drink from a bodega. The Daily News reports that san worker Anthony Pollard "told cops he had parked his sweeper to say hello to a cousin and buy a soda at the ND Food Market, his usual spot for a nightly break." He had been standing outside the store with two other men when a car drove by and someone fired more than a dozen times at the store from inside the vehicle. Pollard was shot in the stomach while the other men were hit in the leg and elbow; their injuries are not life-threatening. Police are asking people with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or send a text message to "CRIMES," (274637), then enter "TIP577".
Drive-By Shooters Probably Didn't Mean to Target Judge's House
Police do not think acting Supreme Court Justice Fernando Camacho's house was the real target in Tuesday's drive-by shooting in Queens. Instead, police suspect shooters thought Camacho's neighbor Dennis Asche lived in the house. Asche argued with someone else last week, and the Daily News says "Camacho intervened in the dispute on Asche's behalf"; on Tuesday, Asche couldn't find a parking space and left his car outside Camacho's. Camacho's career as a former prosecutor is recalled in the NY Times: When he became an ADA, he "was soon knee-deep in drug crews: gangs with names like the Jheri Curls, the Wild Cowboys, the Young Talented Children." Apparently the Jheri Curls were "known for their shaved temples and slick curled hair on top."
