Is The City Cracking Down On Raw Egg-Infused Cocktails?

Is The City Cracking Down On Raw Egg-Infused Cocktails?

Protein shakes aren't the only drinks that contain raw eggs. A number of high-end bars and lounges have started using raw egg whites and raw egg yolks in their cocktails, and according to the Times, drink makers believe they are under attack from the city due to overblown salmonella concerns. Rumors of the raw egg crackdown stem from a Jan. 19 health code violation leveled against SoHo's Pegu Club because a barkeep allegedly didn't tell a patron his drink included raw eggs. more ›

Open Wide for Coke's New Carbonated Milk!

Open Wide for Coke's New Carbonated Milk!

This is the funnest thing to happen to boring old milk since the crazy straw! The Coca-Cola Company just launched a new carbonated milk drink called Vio "Vibrancy Drink," and New Yorkers are the first consumers in the world to pour the product into their discerning mouth holes! Developed in their Atlanta laboratory, the beverage requires no refrigeration and comes in four "natural" flavors: peach mango, berry, citrus, and tropical colada. According to the Post, it's being sold in delis around NYC for about $2.50 per 8oz aluminium bottle, and each bottle has 26 grams of sugar. The company promises that Vio is "a refreshing sensory experience" that contains just "a hint of rBGH-free skim milk" and tastes "like a birthday party for a polar bear." And a reviewer for BevNET.com, a drink industry research site, says the Peach Mango Vio is "slightly reminiscent of a lassi drink. However, what starts out seeming not so sweet turns almost overwhelming by the time you are half way through the bottle." Which makes sense, because polar bear birthday parties can get a little overwhelming. Have you tried this exciting new carbonated milk product yet, and if so, how refreshing was your sensory experience? more ›

We're Drunk, Not Fat, New Yorkers Lie in Survey

We're Drunk, Not Fat, New Yorkers Lie in Survey

A recently-released survey found that while NYC residents admit they enjoy a drink or two to unwind, they may be in denial about their weight problems. According to the Post, a Siena Research Institute survey found that of the New Yorkers who say they drink alcohol, 45 percent estimate they have one or two drinks in a week. On the other end of the spectrum, 12 percent admit they knock back over 15 drinks every week. (Is that a lot?) And 41 percent of New Yorkers admit they're fat, but 2007 federal statistics tell a different story, estimating that 56 percent of NYC residents are overweight. Poll organizer Dr. Don Levy pins the discrepancy New Yorkers' refusal to face the truth about their disgusting fat-bodies: "It's one thing to lie to me. It's another thing to lie to yourself." As for the drinking habits, the survey says upstate New Yorkers actually drink more than city folk, which doesn't surprise snob on the street David Dutkanicz, who tells the Post, "I agree with those numbers. People have more to do here than drink. Whenever I'm in upstate New York, I see more drunken and sloppy behavior." more ›

"Miracle on the Hudson" Pilot Gets Drink

"Miracle on the Hudson" Pilot Gets Drink

New York's Sully fever shows no signs of breaking; or at least businesses show no sign of giving up trying to cash in on pilot Chesley Sullenberger's life-saving emergency landing in the Hudson River last month. Village pub the Half Pint is in the papers this morning because of their new cocktail, "The Sully," which consists of two shots of Grey Goose vodka and "a splash of water." Carla Iny of Brooklyn tells the Post, "It's a classy drink for a classy man. It's cool and smooth—like Sully." It's only a matter of time before all this adulation goes to Sully's head and he ends up living in Malibu hosting his own reality show like Pimp My Plane or something. Oh well, at least Sully fans now have have something to get wasted on while partying in their "Sully is my copilot" t-shirt. more ›

This photo was taken last night, January 13th, which can only mean one thing: Sparks is still alive! Not too long ago we shed some unnatural orange-tinted tears over the drink, which MillerCoors allegedly stopped production of and was to pull from the shelves by January 10th. more ›

Study: Drinking and Riding (the Subway) Don't Mix

Almost half of all accidental subway fatalities happen to riders with alcohol in their bloodstreams, according to a study by Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, which looked at data on subway deaths between 1990 and 2003. 145 of the 315 accidental fatalities during that time period were found to involve some degree of alcohol, though the report doesn't specify how blotto the victims were, if at all. more ›

MeatWater Promises Delicious Dinner in a Bottle

MeatWater Promises Delicious Dinner in a Bottle

The specialty beverage industry – particularly Smart Water – is now the recipient of a clever parody from Brooklyn designer/photographer Till Krautkramer, who’s rolled out an elaborate marketing campaign for a line of beverages called MeatWater. The website proudly declares that the drink uses “only the finest protein” for such “High Efficiency Survival Beverages” as Dirty Hot Dog, “an authentic taste of the Big Apple you can sip through a straw!” and Italian Sausage:

Mangia! You’ll feel like youse is at da famous San Gennaro festival in New Yawk’s Little Italy after drinkin’ dis. But widdout the annoying bridge-and-tunnel crowds askin’ “How much is doze zeppoles? Tree fuh a dollah? I’ll take tree.”

New Calorie Rules for Restaurants to Include Cocktails

  • A 6 ounce pomegranate martini packs 500-600 calories. The New York State Restaurant Association has filed a lawsuit against the Health Department to block the regulation; they were successful in stopping a previous iteration of the rules last September. Of course, you wouldn’t be caught dead sipping a mojito at T.G.I. Friday’s, so you’re probably thinking this doesn’t affect you.
